March 18, 2014:

Dr. Lina Medrano was born in Cebu, Philippines. The sixth child and third daughter of Leonora de la Cruz and Dionisio Ebro, she graduated high school and then summa cum laude from the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. She completed her Doctorate in Medicine at University of Santo Tomas and performed her rotations at various hospitals in Manila; her internship at St John's Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota; her General Practice Residency at St Luke's Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota; and her Internal Medicine Residency at St. Louis County Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Lina then returned to the Philippines and taught at Centro Escolar University.

When she moved back to St Louis in the late 1960s, Dr Lina and her husband Dr. Cresenciano Agida Medrano established firm roots and raised five children in all. Dr. Lina built their family with help from her sister-in-law, while she worked at various hospitals in St. Louis and then built her private practice of internal medicine, cardiology and geriatric care along with her husband's obstetrics & gynecology practice in Perryville, Missouri. After a sabbatical to care for her husband during his terminal illness and ultimate 49 years of marriage, Dr. Lina returned to medicine at the Bellefontaine Habilitation Center and treated patients there until her retirement in Fall 2012.

She was an early child pianist and swimmer, and thus she instilled in her children a disciplined work ethic and a need for a well-balanced life that these activities taught her.

Throughout her career, she was actively involved in the Philippine Medical Association's St. Louis Chapter's membership, scholarship fundraising, and governance. Over the years, she held the local chapter's positions of Secretary, Treasurer and then President (for several terms). She later held a term as the head of the organization's Women's Auxiliary.

Being comfortable traveling around the world, Dr. Lina spent the last two years enjoying retirement with family and friends and continuing her travels with both groups. An avid Mah Jong player in the early years, she then found occasional joy in concentrating on only one slot machine per trip to the casino - the one machine that deserved her attention and occasionally paid out. Her grandchildren then became her joy as she shared her grandmotherly experiences with close friends who formed the Perlas.

At rest, she is joining her husband Cris, her son Robert, and daughter Christy Lynn. Dr. Lina leaves her sons Randy and Ryan, both of Manhattan, New York, and son Rommel, his wife Laura and their children, Mila and Ivan, all of St Louis, Missouri.

"To Randy, Ryan, and Rommel: I am so very sorry for your loss of your mother. She faced a very rough journey at the end; however, she lived a very full and..." David Siegel (New York, NY)
