Linwood Baer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 3, 2013.

Linwood Maines Baer, Jr., 77, of Swansea, passed away October 2, 2013 after a long, brave struggle with heart disease. Born in Fall River, on November 20, 1935, he was the son of the late Linwood Maines Baer, Sr. and Ellen (Buckley) Baer.

He attended Coughlin Elementary School in Fall River and at the age of ten he and his family moved to Swansea. He was a graduate of Joseph Case High School, class of 1953 and Bradford Durfee Technical Institute, now UMASS Dartmouth, class of 1957 where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering.

He served in the Unites States Army for three months in the Critical Skills Program. He then went to work in the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport working directly on submarines. He provided technical services starting with working on the U.S.S. Nautaulus, the first nuclear submarine for six months and was responsible for the installation of the Cruise Missile on several submarines in the late 1980's. He was the recipient of the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award and the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award. Over a wonderful 38 year career he traveled extensively, assumed increased responsibility, and retired as Department Head and Comptroller in 1993.

An incorporator of Bay Coast Bank, formerly Citizens Union Bank, he was a former member of the Finance and Advisory committee, the Cedar Cove Club, and the Cole's River Club all in Swansea . An active member of Christ Episcopal Church, he was a Vestry Member, both a Jr. and Sr. Warden. He was an organizer for their annual Harvest Festival and obtained the advertisers for the Harvest Festival Newspaper for 20 years.

Linwood leaves behind his loving wife Shelby (Violette) Baer with whom he celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary in May with his four children and nine grandchildren. He is survived by a son David of Swansea, a son Douglas and his wife Cynthia of Cranston and their children Lindsey, Dylan, and Charlie, a daughter, Susan Zeitler and her husband Eugene of Sherman, CT, and their children Shae and Olivia, a daughter Cheryl Rohrer and her husband Timothy of Pittsford, NY and their children Katie, Ted, Jack, and Hugh.

He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and enjoyed sailing, skiing, tennis, and golf over the years. In retirement he enjoyed traveling and wintering in Naples, Florida with his wife. He will be sadly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, and many friends.

His Requiem Eucharist will be held Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 10:00AM in Christ Episcopal Church, 57 Main St., Swansea. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours will be held Friday from 4:00 to 7:00PM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at BIRCHCREST, 189 Gardner's Neck Rd. Swansea. Contributions in his honor may be made to Christ Church, 57 Main St., Swansea, MA 02777. Burial in Christ Church Cemetery.
