Lois Whitworth Lentz passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at the age of 103 years. Lois was born on October 29, 1910, to William Silas Whitworth and Mary Louetta Wright, in the Watterson community of Bastrop County, Texas. She had five sisters and two brothers, all born and raised on the Whitworth farm. She attended grade school at Eight Live Oaks and graduated from Bastrop High School in 1929. She attended Texas A&I University and Stephen F. Austin University and later received her Library Science training at the University of Texas. From 1930 to 1938, Lois taught elementary school at Pettytown and Red Rock, both in Bastrop County. Lois married Dennis C. Lentz on April 6, 1934. They had one son, David B. Lentz. The family moved to Conroe after Dennis Lentz concluded his Army service, having served in World War II. On May 1, 1954, Lois joined the staff of the young Montgomery County Library, under the direction of Katherine Ard. Her career with the Montgomery County Library spanned 22 years, during which she served in every department from clerk to acting librarian. The last 15 years were spent in the reference and cataloging departments. After her retirement in 1976, Lois enjoyed reading, gardening, birding with friends, and performing volunteer work at the library and other community organizations. Lois was a Charter Member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Conroe VFW Post #4709 and maintained her membership for more than 40 years. Having served on the founding Board of Directors for the Montgomery County Genealogical Society, she helped to compile and edit "Montgomery County History" in 1981. Lois was also a Master Gardener and helped to establish the Friendship Garden in Conroe. For many years, she was also a member of the Houston Outdoor Nature Club and was actively involved in the formation of the Big Thicket Preserve in East Texas, a signature project of First Lady, Mrs. Lady Bird Johnson. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis, as well as her parents, two brothers, and four sisters. She is survived by her son, David B. Lentz of Conroe; granddaughter, Suann Lentz Hereford, and her husband, Steven Shane Dulin, of Montgomery; grandson, John Lentz Hereford, and his fiancée, Laurie O'Brien, of Huntsville; great-granddaughter, Kristin Hereford, of Huntsville; great-grandsons Joshua Dulin, of Kingwood, and Jeremy Dulin, currently stationed in San Diego with the US Navy. Lois maintained a loving relationship with the mother of her grandchildren, Sue Hereford, and husband, Charles Hereford. She is also survived by her sister, Ethel McClanahan, of Bastrop, as well as several nieces and nephews. Graveside services for Lois will be held on Monday, July 14, at 11:00am at the Old Red Rock Cemetery in Red Rock, Texas. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 13, from 2:00-4:00pm at Metcalf Funeral Home in Conroe. To celebrate the remarkable life of Lois Lentz, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests that you honor her memory by making a donation to the organization of your choice. We would like to thank our friends at the First United Methodist Church in Conroe, especially Janet Stilwell, Janet and Sam Cable, and David and Diane Henderson, for their care and support over the past year. Our family is also greatly appreciative to her caregivers, Jacqueline, Tellia, and Jackie, for their loving care and attention to "Grandma Lois" during the last months of her life.
