Lois M. McLeary Lois Marie (Hanson) McLeary was born in Seattle and passed away peacefully, at age 91, on February 8, 2014. She grew up in Seattle, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1940. Lifelong friendships she made with Betty (Bunny) Gordon and Peggy (Pegs) White while attending Roosevelt were cherished by Lois. Lois also attended the University of Washington, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Sociology in 1948. It was during her college years, while working at Pacific Bell Telephone Company, that she met her future husband, Edward John McLeary. They married and moved to the Columbia Basin, living on the Rocky Ford Creek, near Soap Lake. Ed was working to build a trout farming business in this rural setting. The early years on the farm were busy, with Lois and Ed starting their family of three children and working to get the business going. Lois and Ed enjoyed an active young and middle adulthood, participating in a range of activities with their family and friends in the community. There are many fond memories of active family outings including ice skating, snow skiing, hunting, dancing, and sailing, as well as gatherings at the family cabin on Blue Lake. During this time the family trout farming business continued to grow, and Lois was able to accompany Ed on several of his international sales trips to Europe, Mexico, and Costa Rica. While living in the Columbia Basin, Lois also utilized her social work skills, working for Catholic Family Services, DSHS, and the Ephrata Senior Center. She was a gifted communicator, exhibiting an ease in empathizing and bonding with others. She truly enjoyed helping others and was quick to provide support. Lois and Ed moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1973, establishing a new home on their trout farm just off Pioneer Way. Lois was close at hand to assist her mother, Elizabeth, who was still living in Seattle. During these years, Lois provided important guidance to her children as they pursued college educations and explored career paths. She also enjoyed participating in lifelong learning pursuits, completing language, history, and art classes at the University of Puget Sound. Genealogy also provided an area of interest and study for Lois in her later years and provides an ongoing legacy that her surviving family will always appreciate. Throughout her lifetime, Lois worked to stay in touch with her childhood, college, and Columbia Basin friends with phone calls, visits, and letter writing. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and placed family first. Lois is survived by her daughter Janis (Brian, Dec.), sons Russ (Maja) and Randy (Ida), grandchildren Wes Peters, Jon Paul (Sarah) McLeary, Drew (Corinne) McLeary, and Jeff (Lauren) McLeary, and great-grandchildren Naomi, Faith, Owen, Kenna, and Finn McLeary. She will be greatly missed by family and friends, and her legacy of love will go forward with her family. Services will be Saturday, February 15, 2014. Viewing from 8:30 am to 9:00 am, then a memorial service at 9:00 am, both at Powers Funeral Home in Sumner.
