On October 7, 2012 the angels of heaven came and put their arms around our beloved, taking her home, entering into eternal rest. She was born June 3, 1920 in Guyton, GA to her proud parents - the late John D. (Sam) and Ida Helmey Ambrose. She is preceded in death by her parents, grand-parents - Kolic and Lelia R. Helmey, husbands - Robert A. Smith, Sam M. Powell (Penny) and Harry S. Harrison, Sons - Harry S. Harrison II (Buddy Powell) and Brian E. Powell, Siblings - Brewton Ambrose, Leroy Ambrose, John D. Ambrose, Jr., Mittry Ambrose, Henry Ambrose, Ruth Davis and Evelyn Ferry, One special Aunt - Hattie Helmey Zipperer. She is...

She is preceded in death by her parents, grand-parents - Kolic and Lelia R. Helmey, husbands - Robert A. Smith, Sam M. Powell (Penny) and Harry S. Harrison, Sons - Harry S. Harrison II (Buddy Powell) and Brian E. Powell, Siblings - Brewton Ambrose, Leroy Ambrose, John D. Ambrose, Jr., Mittry Ambrose, Henry Ambrose, Ruth Davis and Evelyn Ferry, One special Aunt - Hattie Helmey Zipperer.

She is survived by a daughter, Myrna Y. Myers, Grandchildren - Marsha Haskins (Jim), Joanna Purvis, Denise Eubanks all of Pooler, GA, Robert Myers (Sandra) of Warner Robins, GA and Stephanie H. Shearhouse (Harry) of Dallas, TX and one brother - Maynard Ambrose of Kissimmee, FL along with two special nieces - Joyce Thomas of Callahan, FL and Capt. Judy Helmey of Savannah, GA along with numerous other nieces and nephews, 13 Great-Grandchildren and 16 Great-Great Grandchildren.

She was a proud bus driver for 35 years, winning several "Bus Rodeo's" between her fellow drivers with the Chatham County Board of Education. She was past President of Chatham County Bus Driver's Association. Lois was also very political, working hand in hand with Joe Frank Harris for Governor, among others. In 1969 she was crowned Mrs. Effingham Co. Homemaker. As a proud southern lady, she worked hard for anything she believed in. She was a long time member of Woodlawn Baptist Church and also attended Fleming Baptist Church in Midway.

The family would like to thank Bryan County Rehab & Nursing Home, the nursing staff at St. Joseph Hospital, 7th floor and Hospice of Savannah for their loving care.

Fairhaven Funeral Home

Viewing will be Tuesday October 9th, 2012 6 p.m to 8 p.m.

Services will be held at Fairhaven Chapel Wednesday October 10th, 2012 2 p.m.

Burial at The Helmey Cemetery next the Berea Methodist Church on Hwy 30 (Effingham)

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Hospice of Savannah or Charity of your choice.
