Lola Mae Baumunk Cannon of Lufkin, Texas passed away March 21, 2014. Lola, the daughter of John Lloyd and Lola Baumunk, was born on April 7, 1925 in San Bernardino, CA and was raised in Bardolph, Illinois. She attended Western Illinois University before moving to Evanston, Illinois where she met and subsequently married Northwestern University student Robert Cannon on September 29, 1950. They celebrated 58 years together until Bob passed away on April 19, 2009.
The Cannon family moved to Lufkin in 1969 where Bob was plant manager and eventually president and managing partner of Texas Foundries. Lola enthusiastically engaged in community service in various organizations. She served in several offices tirelessly, including president of the Community Concert Association as well as the Rotary Anns. She was a long time member and served in various leadership positions, including director and president of the Lufkin Historical and Literary Society, an organization for which she cared deeply.
Lola also served at Memorial Medical Center, the Museum of East Texas, and the Lufkin Garden Club as well as other civic organizations. She and Bob were fortunate to have travelled extensively to many countries around the world. One trip of particular distinction was Lola's selection to visit Ireland for her and Bob's 50th anniversary where they were joined by the entire family for the celebration.
Known for her sunny disposition, Lola was an eternal optimist. And in this day of electronic mail, texts, and tweets, she was still a prolific letter writer. She and Bob loved dancing and would never miss a Lufkin Cotillion Dance club event. Lola was a multi-faceted individual who had many interests throughout her life.
Lola is preceded in death by her loving husband Bob, her parents, and sisters Norma Jean Keapper and Shirley Vincent.
She is survived by her sister Virginia Krueger of Iowa; her sons, Douglas and wife Lucja of Houston, Gregory of Dallas, Curtis and his partner Jeff Brown of Dallas; granddaughter, Anna Frances Mitchell and husband Noah of London, England; and grandson, Robert Cannon of Houston.
Lola greatly enjoyed recent years with her bridge club "sisters", the wonderful neighbors, and her many dear friends and family.
Expressions of sympathy in Mrs. Cannon's memory may be made to the Museum of East Texas, 503 N. 2nd Street, Lufkin, Texas 75901
A visitation will be held at Gipson Funeral Home, 1515 S. Chestnut Street, Lufkin on Sunday, March 30, 2014 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. A private burial will be held later.
