Lolalisa King Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 19, 2017.

Lolalisa DeCarlo King was born on October 30, 1960 in Baton Rouge, LA to the marriage of Mr. Montgomery Wordsworth King and his wife the former Katie Odella Gertrude Hull. Lolalisa was raised in a Christian home and dedicated her life to Christ at the age of 9 and was baptized by Rev. Dr. Theodore J. Jemison, Jr. at the Mount Zion First Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. Lolalisa departed this life on June12, 2017.

Lolalisa will be remembered as a beautiful and loving child that became an adoring and dedicated mother to her surviving son, David Kent Clark, III of Detroit, MI. As a child at Mount Zion she was active in the Sunday School, the Baptist Training Union and the Cherubim and Young Adult Choirs.

Lolalisa was a dedicated scholar and received numerous accolades for her studies in high school at Baker Senior High. Lolalisa was always intrigued with home design and construction. Encouraging her, her college professor father frequently took her on tours of neighborhood homes under construction so she would learn all of the behind-the-scenes stages of building technology. She decided to pursue a career in architecture at Southern University under the supervision of Henry L. Thurman.

Lolalisa tackled her design and engineering classes with glee and determination. While at Southern, she was active in student life and was a former Southern University Homecoming Court, Miss Senior. She flourished in her studies and became the third woman to graduate with a Bachelor of Architecture from her alma mater. She remained loyal to Southern University as a member of the Southern University National Alumni Federation and the Southern University National Alumni Federation – Houston Alumni Chapter.

She was made as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. 's Beta Psi Chapter on the Fall 1979 line. Lolalisa remained active in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and joined Eta Omicron Omega Chapter in High Point, North Carolina.

While interning at Hunt-Thurman Associates, Lolalisa recognized she needed to understand finance to achieve her business ambitions. She went on to earn an MBA in Finance & Investment Banking from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Lolalisa went on to become one of the first one hundred African American women to become a licensed architect in the United States, the first in North Carolina.

In the mid '90s, she began her own regional architectural practice. Over the next decade, she would recruit and train her own staff, while designing and leading numerous projects and teaching at North Carolina A&T University. Her practice eventually covered eleven southeastern states, including but not limited to: Louisiana, Texas, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Virginia.

While leading her practice, Lolalisa became enthusiastic about using green technology in her design projects. Early 2006, Lolalisa was recruited to lead the Florida operations of an established 30-year-old, Atlanta based architectural firm. She relocated to Orlando, FL and became VP of Operations. Her highlight was overseeing the energy-efficient replacement of the energy-saving Multi-User Flight Information Display System (MUFIDS) at the Orlando International Airport. She also was appointed and became very active on Orlando's Permitting Division Advisory Board and the Mayor's Academy, all while serving as the Chair of the Board of Directors of Orlando Technical and Community College.

Lolalisa was deeply involved in the community as an eWomen Network Member, Orlando Mayor's Academy Graduate, Orlando Technical Center Advisory Board Chair, City of Orlando Permitting & Advisory Board Member, I-4 Design Review Committee Member, Florida Citrus Sports Volunteer, as well as serving within the AIA Orlando Finance Committee, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., United Arts of Central Florida, Leadership Orlando Class 70, Polk County Citizen's Academy, and was a LIFEWORK Leadership class of 2007-2008 graduate.

Other regional involvement includes serving as a Christian Message Through Art Board Member, YWCA Board Member, BRACC Institute Speaker, National Standing Committee Chair for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Crown Ministries Teacher and Trainer, AIA Piedmont Former President, AIA NC Former Board Member, a NC SAFE, Inc. volunteer, as well as holding accountability as a licensed minister under Bishop George W. Brooks of the Mount Zion Baptist Church, Inc.

In late 2008, Lolalisa was recruited by a Houston, TX contract compliance consulting firm to be Director of Business Operations & Administration. Lolalisa was a member of the American Public Transportation Association(Business Member) and the South West Transit Association (Affiliate).

The firm's current Texas projects include oversight of eight Department of Energy approved retrofit activities for Fort Bend County, a rammed earth office building for Tierra Eco Solutions qualifying for LEED Gold and a Houston-located Senior Community Center qualifying for LEED Silver certification.

Over the past decade, Lolalisa and her team at Architect for Life, PC worked effectively with several municipalities and private corporations in implementing green projects. Her passion for professionalism, integrity and helping her community will live on.

Lolalisa is survived by her son, David Kent, her mother, Katie King, a brother, Thomas Jefferson King and a host of family, friends, and classmates.

To the family of "Ms. Architect for Life" my dear friend, LolaLisa. In the word it is written that Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning." I know at this moment joy seems unthinkable, but just trust and believe that the comforter will sustain you. LolaLisa was a colleague who became a friend. We shared many contracting discussions that would some how find their way to NC A&T (my Alma Mater) and Southern. I will miss her just as I you know will, but I am comforted in knowing that she is at rest. No more negotiations or preparing proposals, she is with the ultimate King of Kings. Rest in peace my friend. James Harper, Jr., Director, Office of Acquisition Management, Federal Transit Administration, Washington, DC.

Lolalisa D. King was more than just a cousin to me. She was a shining example of everything a confident, industrious, intelligent, spiritual and fun loving woman should be. I could write a book about her. Even though her schedule was always packed with meetings and new projects, she always managed to find time to spend with me, or just have a conversation. Even though we lived in different states, I could always count on that phone call that she always started with, "Hello Cousin!" She was so genuine, I could hear her smiling through the phone.

Recently, my husband and I, and daughter Kristie, moved from the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area to the central valley of California. Lolalisa had a conference to attend in Los Angeles and asked if we could meet, which we did. We had a wonderful weekend and laughed, talked, went to a spa and enjoyed every moment. Everywhere we went, she had the ability to make anyone, no matter what mood they were in, smile or laugh as she flashed that beautiful "Lolalisa smile". She then drove over 300 miles to take me home even though she had to drive back to Los Angeles the next day! We were in the process of making plans to relive this trip later on this year when she was called home to be with The Lord.

"Well it's a highway to heaven, none can walk up there, but the pure in heart." Lolalisa D. King is walking up the King's highway.
