Lori Roehl Obituary

Lori Claudette Roehl

Unable are the loved to die. For love is immortality.
~Emily Dickinson

Our dear and beloved Lori, mother, wife, child, aunt, sister, and friend left this Earth on Sunday, September 15, 2013; she leaves us with aching hearts, but an eternal loving presence in our souls. She was 58 years young.

Lori was born in Corona, California to Sam and Joan Roehl. A well meaning relative once commented on how skinny Lori was as a baby. This comment was quickly followed by a tongue-lashing provided by Lori's mother Joan. No one was going to be anything but loving and caring with her beautiful and healthy baby girl. Lori inherited this "Mama Bear" characteristic and woe to the person who had anything but positive intentions for any of Lori's friends, family, let alone her beautiful daughter, Lindsay.

Lori was a colorful, loving, vibrant, and hardworking person. She earned her BA in Spanish from the University of California, Davis, and an RN and ARNP from the University of California, San Francisco (June 1977 to May 1982). Never complacent, Lori continued to develop her skills and knowledge as a Nurse Practitioner and became board certified: American Nurses Credentialing Center, and National Board, Perioperative Nursing.

As a young Nurse Practitioner in 1982, fresh out of graduate school, Lori arrived in Yakima to work at the Yakima Valley Farmworkers Clinic. Lori's fluency in Spanish, together with her tender heart and desire to serve the uniquely diverse Yakima community, lead her into a life's work that would be personally rewarding. Her love for learning and her passion for education led her to join the faculty at the University of Washington where she taught in the PA program. More recently she spent time working in the emergency room at Yakima Memorial Hospital and also worked alongside Doctor Todd Orvald at Orthopedics Northwest.

Family was paramount to Lori and she never turned down an invitation for a family dinner in Seattle--even when she had to be back in Yakima the next day for an early morning surgery. Lori inherited a love for the outdoors from her father and found her perfect match when she met Yakima outdoorsman Dave Delp. Together they camped in snow caves in the winter, hiked the Enchantments, and most recently entertained Argentinian friends with a hike to Bumpin Lake near Yakima. Lori's life was complete when she was blessed with a beautiful baby girl in 1989. Lindsay was the light of Lori's life, and Lori could be seen on the sidelines cheering her on throughout her soccer career, from the Yakima Blasters to the Scripps College Athenas. She was a cheerleader not only for Lindsay, but also was a positive force in the lives of countless others.

Lori leaves her husband Dave, daughter Lindsay, parents Sam and Joan Roehl, sisters Lynn Clark (Herb), Lisa Pascualy (Rafael), Juli Lindquist (Tom), nieces and nephews, Jillian, Spencer, and Stephanie Clark, Alex, Gabriel, and Julia Pascualy, and Sam, Jeff, and Sara Lindquist, and many dear friends.

A service celebrating the life of Lori will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, September 22nd at the First Presbyterian Church of Yakima. In lieu of flowers, Lori's family requests that donations be made in her honor to the Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation for Children's Village.

As the calendar days pass, I realize that it has been almost 6 months since you have passed, Lori. Unbelievable still that you are gone. I was a student at medex and can remember specifically two important things that you taught me. One was what a spondylolesthesis is (I was so impressed that you could pronounce it, a feat I have yet to master some days!) and you taught me the value of looking everything up that I don't know. Specifically, our group was stuck on a word in a case study and we asked you what it meant. You told us that it would be important for us to know it and we should look it up and discuss it's meaning. We did and I have not forgotten your important lesson since.
Thank you for your time and service here on earth, we sure do miss you!

I am so sorry that I have just heard of this tragedy tonight and my heart is broken. This message is to Lindsey. I have such sympathy for you. I grieve for you for the loss of your mom; I can not imagine the pain. You, Lindsey, are a beautiful creation, just as you are, created by God. Any one that has called you friend or has been acquainted with you has been blessed by your very being. You have always radiated such joy and life. You are such a kindhearted beautiful gifted young woman and I know your mom was extremely proud of you. Dearest Lindsey, I pray that you will have peace in knowing that our God is sovereign and has a plan even in the midst of such heartache. He has you in the palm of His hand, He knows you and He loves every fragment of your being. He is so proud to call you His daughter. You are so worthy of being a child of His, He adores you and lifts you up by His mighty righteous right hand. He covers you with His wing and you are the apple of His eye. You are safe in the arms of Jesus. Amen!
If you ever need me Lindsey please call me. Charlie Smith's mom-Kirsten Smith 969-4024. I love you dear one and have known you since you were a young child and have admired you as you have grown into such a lovely young woman. God Bless you and keep you and make His Light shine upon you. My love and sorrow and Hope and peace to you,

Forever in my heart you will be Lori. I loved the way your eyes smiled at me, you talked with your eyes and made that serious face, I loved your trust in me with your prized possession, Lindsay. Your funny Halloween socks you wore into spring (always made me smile). I love that I always knew what to expect with you- your schedule stayed the same.. our talks, your support, visiting you at work. I loved being your personal shopper - taking your credit card shopping for clothes for you at Nordstrom, the can of Crisco in the bathroom "best night cream", seeing you daily was a gift to me -Thank you for being so good to me, for your support, your listening ear. I could go on and on... I will miss you and see you again in heaven Lori...till then I will forever love and remember you in my heart.

I worked with Lori at Orthopedics Northwest and very much enjoyed her love of nature. She was always soft spoken and took her time with each and every patient she saw. She was a beautiful person inside and out and will be missed dearly by all who had the pleasure of meeting her. My thoughts go out to her daughter.

Diego y Carmen. Our prayers and thoughts with the family, sometimes we don't understand Gods ways but we learn to trust Him, I ask You Lord to please comfort her family and friends forth it has been a terrible lost ,although her legacy, her goodness and her love will forever be with us ; The angels are always near to those who are grieving, to whisper to them that their loved ones are safe in the hand of God.
Till then ..... love leave memories no one can't still ..........

I worked with Lori at the MEDEX program, and I can only echo the many things others have said about what a great colleague she was. She gave her best for the students. She is gone much too soon.

I worked many years with Lori, and always appreciated her enthusiasm and zest for life. In the last few years when our paths would cross, she always had a warm greeting and a gentle tease. I will miss her--a great person and colleague.

It will be the little things
that you will remember,
the quiet moments,
the smiles, the laughter.
And although it may seem
hard right now,
it will be the memories
of these little things
that help to push
away the pain
and bring the smiles
back again.

We have been grieving with you Dave, Lindsey and the Roehl family all week while at Wapato Point. It seemed fitting because it was all of you that first introduced us to that corner of the world and we spent a glorious day there with the Roehl family the summer Dave and Lori got married. We have so many fond memories of spending time with you and Lori - running, hiking, Cabo, dinners -and we will miss her deeply. She was such a beautiful, upbeat person who always had a positive thought for every situation. We look to find comfort in knowing she is in a more peaceful place and hope you all can too.

Carmen, Camila, Nacho y Diego……tú familia Argentina…….

I first met Lori in 2007, when I started teaching at Medex. She was a role model for all of us; a champion for the underserved, passionate about teaching and lifelong learning, and a fierce advocate for students. Her sunny disposition lit up a room. My thoughts and prayers and most heartfelt condolences for the loss of this remarkable woman go out to her family, friends, colleagues, and former students. I will miss her.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this very sad time. I first met Lori when she was expecting Lindsi,as I worked for her OB. We were comrades in health care. Later we worked together whenever I needed a surgical assist in a pinch she was always reliable and willing to help. I considered her a friend when we would cross paths, she was absolutely beautiful.,lovable and capable. I'm just so sad that I will not have those moments again, but I will treasure her memory. She is now in Gods Care !!

Lori was a champion nurse practitioner and leader in our community serving as a role model for those of us in the field and the patients she served. Thank you, Lori for setting such a fast pace and running a race of excellence. I will miss you! Lindsay, clearly you will find comfort in your memories but when you ache for your mom, just look in the mirror and watch her smile back at you. You twinkle just like her. Dave, may the the love of those around you bring comfort.

Dave, Lindsay and the Roehl famly,
My heart is broken. I share your grief during this loss.
Grief, like the ocean comes in waves, only to recede and come yet again.
But with time comes healing; Memories wash ashore
and are bathed by the golden sun.
Grab hold of these memories
and let them fill the emptiness May memories of Lori's golden smile and amazing energy bring you peace.

To Lori, friend, you went too soon. Thank you for dreaming, sharing and sweating with me for almost 2 decades. Your open heart and bright conversation will never be replaced. I miss you a lot. See you in heaven.

I could always count on Lori for a smile and a great laugh. She lit up the room with her electrifying energy everywhere she went. I was blessed to have worked and played with Lori, and take rides in the convertible with her. Lori was a trusted friend, a supportive colleague, a free spirited individual, and a loving and compassionate person, who above all else was self-sacrificing.
My heart goes out to you Dave and Lindsay. There are no words that can sooth the loss and pain. Lori touched all of our lives in so many ways, and she will be remembered as the bright shinning gem, that she was.

Lori assisted with my hip replacement surgery in March 2013. I wrote her a thank you note since she did such a good job. Then I saw her at the Capital theater in the summer. She came up to me and shook my hand and thanked me for the note. I was so surprised that she would go out of her way to be so kind to thank me and remember me. She was such a pleasant and caring person that will be very much missed.

I was blessed to know Lori for many years. I first met her in the 1980's. We reconnected through work and common friends over the years. Lori was always kind, generous and upbeat. She was dedicated to her family and adored her daughter. No matter what was happening at work or in her life, she was always positive and upbeat. She was dedicated and hardworking. We reconnected once again in 2011 when I returned to work for the MEDEX Northwest PA Program. She jumped right in and made me feel welcomed, and helped me to get my bearings in medical education again. I am so grateful for the time we shared. I did not realized how precious that time would be. I will miss her.
