Sulphur-Mary Lorraine Wynn, 89, a Catholic, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 25, 2014, in a local care center with family at her side.
She was a native of New Orleans and loved asking people, "Y'all never guess where I'm from." She graduated from Eleanor McMain High School for Girls and attended Maybin School of Business and Tulane University. She met and married I. J. "Jim" Wynn and they briefly lived in Houma, New Iberia, Beaumont, and Alexandria before living in Lake Charles from 1958-1972. She was the Sales Office Manager at McNeese Credit Union for 8 years and she and Jim attended the home McNeese football games. They lived in Atlanta, GA, Abbeville and New Iberia where she taught accounting at Delta School of Business. They moved back to Sulphur in 1981.
Lorraine, or "Sweet Lorraine" as she was affectionately known, was a member of both the Lake Charles and Sulphur Bridge Clubs, and served as Director of each club for many years, even playing with some of the same bridge partners for over fifty years. She achieved Life Master in 1989. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sulphur, serving as lector and a Catholic Daughter for over 50 years.
She and her Auntie Pearl and sister Marjorie Patin traveled to many countries, including Russia, China, India, France, Italy, and even kissed the Blarney Stone in Ireland. She and Jim traveled to Ireland and celebrated their 50th anniversary on a Rhine River cruise. In later years, she enjoyed family trips to see the Houston Astros.
Lorraine and Jim cooked side by side in the kitchen, creating many delicious meals and memories for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her granddaughters will remember her for her strong faith, her love for her family, her sense of humor, and her ever-so-famous "necta ice cream sodas."
Lorraine loved hummingbirds, watching ice skating, and cheering on the New Orleans Saints and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Many people may not have known her amazing skills as a seamstress, sewing matching Easter and Christmas dresses for her four daughters when they were young.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Jim Wynn of Sulphur; her four daughters, Sharon Ashford of Lake Charles, Doreen "Bo" Finnie and husband, Tom of Carlyss, Kitty Gavel and husband, Jeff of Sulphur, and CiCi Gibson and husband, Dan of Carencro; nine granddaughters Jenny Garcia, Kristen Manshack, Katie Maddox, Aimee Benoit, Wendy Kleinpeter, Marissa Gavel, Lauren Gibson, Haley Mouton, and Alison Gibson; and ten great-grandchildren with one on the way. She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Irene Karstendiek, and her sister, Marjorie Patin. She was the last surviving Karstendiek. Until her first great grandson was born, girls had dominated her family for 113 years.
A memorial visitation will be held at Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home on Sunday, July 27, from 4-7 p.m. with a scripture service at 6 p.m. followed by rosary at 6:30. A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 28 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sulphur. The Very Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau will officiate. Inurnment will be held in Consolata Cemetery. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to Immaculate Conception Church, 2700 Maplewood Dr., Sulphur, LA 70663.
