Louis Reichert Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 30, 2016.

Louis Emile Reichert entered into eternal rest on Monday, November 28, 2016 at the age of 94. Beloved son of the late Emile and Mary Dennies Reichert; brother of the late George Reichert, Mary Stevens and Alice Curole. Loving husband of 71 years to the late Joyce Stigler Reichert. He will be sadly missed by his loving daughters, JoAnn Castagnetta Ponthier (Wayne), Deborah Piattoly Reeves (Ronnie) and Nadine Couture (George). Proud grandfather of Henry Castagnetta, Tavis Piattoly (Lindsey), Chad Couture, Aimee Couture, Aaron Couture and the late Craig Castagnetta. Loving great grandfather of Brenden, Brandon, Henry Castagnetta III, (Kayla), Nicholas Losch, Malorie Nunez, Grace Piattoly and Bria Raimer. He is also survived and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Louis was a resident of Slidell, LA for the past 16 years and 43 years in St. Bernard Parish. He was the founder and owner of Reichert’s Family Shoe Store. He retired from NOPD and as a Major with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office. Also retired Justice of the Peace in St. Bernard Parish. Louis was past president of Carolyn Park Civic Association & Boosters Club, Optimus Club for Boys, Lifetime member of International Narcotic Association, Fort Polk Volunteer Fire Department, Chalmette Moose Lodge, Lexington Place Civic Association, Friends of Harmony Lodge #58, F&AM Metairie, LA. He was a Golden Gloves AAU Catholic Amateur Boxer in his younger years and member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

In 1980, Retired Major Reichert introduced the first Women’s Home and Street Defense Course in St. Bernard Parish. Eventually men were also included at the request of the men. He received numerous invitations to teach this course throughout the state of LA, such as Delgado Community College, St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office, Terrebonne Sheriff’s Office, Gonzales Police Department, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Department and Criminal Sheriff’s Office in New Orleans. This school received national and international recognition for his method of teaching. It aired on TV and radio around New Orleans and Canadian Broadcasting Network flew down and filmed the entire course. It was broadcast throughout Canada.

Relatives, friends, St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, Justice of the Peace & Constables Association and New Orleans Police Department are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Sunday, December 4th from 11:00AM – 2:00PM, followed by a funeral service in his memory beginning at 2:00PM. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with his beloved wife in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.

Miss CC

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

When I first met Mr. Louis, he was an old man that needed some help. Then I got to know him. He was strongly independent. He spoke fondly of his wife, children and grandchildren. He greatly appreciated all that they did for him.
