Louis Peter Kivi, M.D. Mason, MI Age 90, died May 10, 2013 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI. He was born June 1, 1922, in Detroit, MI. He graduated from Ann Arbor Senior High School in 1940. During high school he was recognized as the nation's best school boy swimmer in the 50, 100, and 200 yard freestyle and breast stroke medley relay receiving national honors. He began his freshman year at the University of Michigan and was awarded the Julie Hopwood scholarship for writing an essay entitled, "A Character Study of a Florida Lobster Fisherman." Age 90, died May 10, 2013 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI. He was born June 1, 1922, in Detroit, MI. He graduated from Ann Arbor Senior High School in 1940. During high school he was recognized as the nation's best school boy swimmer in the 50, 100, and 200 yard freestyle and breast stroke medley relay receiving national honors. He began his freshman year at the University of Michigan and was awarded the Julie Hopwood scholarship for writing an essay entitled, "A Character Study of a Florida Lobster Fisherman." While attending the University of Michigan he entered the armed forces in April, 1941. He was assigned to 385th Bomb Group 548th Squadron at the Great Ashfield Airfield in England flying B-17 missions over Nazi Germany. At the end of WWII he returned to Germany to fly home French prisoners of war, and also did food drops over Holland. He was honorably discharged from the Army Air Force in May, 1945. He returned to the United States and continued medical school earning his Bachelor of Science from the University of Michigan and his Medical Doctorate from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1950. Dr. Kivi completed post-graduate training in Orthopaedic Surgery. He practiced private Orthopaedic Surgery in Ann Arbor from 1953-1990 and Independent Medical Examinations in Ann Arbor and Manistee, MI from 1990 to 2008. He held a staff appointment at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital as Head of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery (1972-1978). He was an active member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Fellow American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, Michigan State Medical Association, Michigan Alumni Association, and the and the University of Michigan Orthopaedic Society. His staff memberships include St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Emeritus, University of Michigan Medical Center Clinical Instructor and Department of Surgery, West Shore Medical Center active non-treating physician. Preceding him in death, grandfather and grandmother, Norman A., curator of the University of Michigan Zoological collection, and Lillian Wood; father and mother, Peter K. and Annetta Wood Kivi; and son, Allen L. Kivi. Surviving are his wife, Effie (Sweetie) Kivi, of Mason, MI; children Cheryl Kivi of Milford, MI, David (Wendy) Kivi of Ann Arbor, MI, Douglas (Mary) Kivi of Pinckney, MI, Craig Kivi of Pinckney, MI, Scott (Patti) Kivi of Dexter, MI, Adam Kivi of Ann Arbor, MI, and Angela Kivi of Shelton, WA; and sister, Lois (Marvin) Nochman. Also surviving are grandchildren, Amanda Kivi, Justin Kivi, Kara (Rob) Pridgen, Kendra (Matt) Gibson, Brandon (Tabitha) Kivi, Brandi (Robert) Castillo, Kaitlyn Kivi, Rebecca Kivi; great-grandchildren Anna, Christian, Rowen, Caleb, Elsie; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers memorial tributes may be made to the University of Michigan Medical School, 1301 Catherine St., #4101, Ann Arbor, MI 48109; the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Orthopaedic Department, Office of Development, P. O. Box 995, Ann Arbor, MI 48106-0995 or any local humane society. The Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 621 S. Jefferson, Mason, MI with Deacon Al Turkovich, officiating, with full military honors. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
