LOUIS LIVINGSTON MITCHELL March 12, 1930 ~ June 17, 2014 Louis L. Mitchell, died on June 17, 2014, at 84 years old. Born in Bronxville, NY, graduate of Kent School, Columbia University, Virginia Theological Seminary, and U.S. School of Naval Justice, he served in the US Marine Corps at the end of the Korean War. Ordained in the Episcopal Church in 1958 after which he served in churches in Mayopac, NY and Birmingham, AL where he became very involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Louis L. Mitchell, died on June 17, 2014, at 84 years old. Born in Bronxville, NY, graduate of Kent School, Columbia University, Virginia Theological Seminary, and U.S. School of Naval Justice, he served in the US Marine Corps at the end of the Korean War. Ordained in the Episcopal Church in 1958 after which he served in churches in Mayopac, NY and Birmingham, AL where he became very involved in the Civil Rights Movement. He then became Director of the Civil Rights Council for the State of Florida as well as serving as chaplain of Bethune-Cookman College. Later he was appointed to the Civil Rights Commission and worked in the South encouraging the integration of hotels and restaurants. After briefly starting the Peace Corps in Barbados, he served as interim Peace Corps Deputy Director of North Africa, Near East, and South Asia after which he served as Country Director of Afghanistan. Was a management advisor to the Ministry of Manpower in Indonesia. Was Vice President of TransCentury and later became President. He ended his career as President of Pact, an International Development nonprofit that sought to lift the lives of the poor and dispossessed around the world. In retirement, he served as an adjunct professor of Management and Leadership of International Nonprofit Organizations at George Mason University. Dad, all of your kids want you to know you inspired us all, not just through your biography, but who you were to all of us. You will forever be a force for good in the nation and world you made better, the faith you practiced in work, the ideals you made real, and the family who is all the greater because of you. We love you and will miss you always. He is predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth Wolfe, and his oldest son, Scott Douglas Mitchell. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Anne T. Mitchell; his six children - Brenda Morgan, Charlotte Ruffner, Tracy Mitchell, Leslie Mitchell, Sarah Bloedorn, and Michael Mitchell; and many loving grandchildren. Family and friends will gather together to celebrate his life on Saturday, June 21, 2014 in Alexandria, VA. A memorial service with extended family and friends will be held at a near future date.
