Obituary

Louis J. Spettel, 82, of Oneonta, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown. He was born on September 16, 1931 in Mineola the son of Louis H. and Madeline K. (Gesell) Spettel. He married Mary Giglio on May 5, 1957. Louie served in the US Navy, aboard the USS Rankin and the USS Coral Sea during the Korean War. For more than 50 years, Louie was a local painting contractor. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and a former member of BPOE 1312. Louis J. Spettel, 82, of Oneonta, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

He was born on September 16, 1931 in Mineola the son of Louis H. and Madeline K. (Gesell) Spettel. He married Mary Giglio on May 5, 1957.

Louie served in the US Navy, aboard the USS Rankin and the USS Coral Sea during the Korean War.

For more than 50 years, Louie was a local painting contractor.

He was a member of St. Mary's Church, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and a former member of BPOE 1312.

Louie loved to hunt and bowl. He took great pleasure in frequenting several of the area casinos, as well as gardening and bird watching.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Spettel of Oneonta; his children, Stephen Spettel and his wife, Kelly of Mt. Vision, Margaret Barker and her husband, Bill of Mt. Vision; four grandchildren, Corey and Ian Spettel, and Cassidy and Christopher Barker, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Scott VanDerveer, associate pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 from 6 to 8pm at which time the family will be in attendance.
