Lucille Stavely Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 21, 2013.

Lucille Catherine Stavely, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother died on February 19, 2013 at St. Anthony Hospital, Lakewood, Colorado, resulting from complications from a fall.

She was born in Denver, Colorado on April 8, 1913 to Frederick A. and Lucille C. Straub. Lucille graduated second in her class at North High School in Denver and then attended DU. She married Dan Stavely in Denver, Colorado on November 6, 1936. He preceded her in death in May of 2003.

Lucille has a daughter, Kathy L. Schroeder (Ray) of Post Falls, Idaho, and a son, John F. Stavely (Jane), of Boulder, Colorado, six grandchildren Jennifer D. Stilkey, Matthew R. Schroeder, Sean D. Stavely, William D. Williams, Benjamin J. Williams, Gretchen L. Williams, and five great grandchildren, with twin girls expected to be born on or near her birthdate.

She was very active in P.E.O. and a number of churches during her many residences, first as the wife of a military officer during World War II, and then afterwards as the wife of a college football coach at Washington State, Stanford, and CU.

Lucille graduated from DU in 1935 and was a teacher for several years, but gladly gave that up to be a full-time mom and homemaker. Besides being a hostess to dozens of athletes for hearty meals at the Stavely residence, and assisting the athletes with tutoring, she was best known as being a true friend to many people with a gift of listening and offering sage advice when asked. Lucille also loved dogs and cared and nurtured many of them over the years.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 23, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church. A reception will immediately follow the service at Sheldon Jackson Hall, also at First Presbyterian Church.

John, It is with heartfelt thoughts, memories I am thinkig of you and your family today. Your mother was one of a kind, and to me, a second "mother." The warmth and love that came from just looking into her eyes or touching her hand are a memory I cherish. I will always and forever remember your mom and your dad with only a smile on my face and a heartful of gratitude. The Bible studies with your dad. Dinners with both of them. Talks and inspiration are something they have passed on to me and etched in my heart forever. I thank God for all of you, especially Mother today, as you were all sent as God's inspiration, love and support! With love, prayers, sincere sympathy and beautiful memories. Kathie

John, I never knew your mother but from all you've said and from what I've read about her - I wish I had. Such love, humor, strength and generosity brings to mind Galatians 5:22 'But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law'.

No wonder, God left her on this earth for such a long time. He sent a message to many generations through her life. May she rejoice with Him.

I remember meeting Coach Dan and Mrs Stavely when Brian and I were in College. We would go to the house almost weekly for what seemed like dozens of pancakes and bacon. Lucille would be in the kitchen quietly preparing the food and Coach Dan would be booming out some story or bible verse. Every once in awhile we would hear "Oh Dan that's enough"and we would all bust out laughing. Little did I know then she would become my fisrt coaching wife mentor. What a wonderful servants heart and precious patience. Praying for you John and Cathy! Love cabrals

I remember Lucille meeting with my mother and father, when they were considering moving to the Meridian 8 years ago. They were in poor health and apprehensive about the move from Nebraska. Lucille opened her heart and home, allowing my parents to tour and then sit for refreshments and a chat. She was so warm and caring. My mother felt as though she was with an old friend. What a special woman Lucille was.
Much Love,
Cindy Matthews
