Dr. Lucius Guese, age 98, died peacefully in Oklahoma City August 11, 2014. A renowned educator, he will be missed but remembered for his gentle spirit & supportive guidance to a countless number of students & colleagues who respected & admired him. Born on April 25, 1916 in Cape Girardeau, MO to Edward & Ethel Guese, he resided in St. Louis, MO all of his life. He graduated from Southeast Missouri State University (Cape Girardeau, MO), received his M.A. from Oklahoma A & M (now known as OSU) & his Ed.D. from Washington U. (St. Louis). Dr. Lucius Guese, age 98, died peacefully in Oklahoma City August 11, 2014. A renowned educator, he will be missed but remembered for his gentle spirit & supportive guidance to a countless number of students & colleagues who respected & admired him. Born on April 25, 1916 in Cape Girardeau, MO to Edward & Ethel Guese, he resided in St. Louis, MO all of his life. He graduated from Southeast Missouri State University (Cape Girardeau, MO), received his M.A. from Oklahoma A & M (now known as OSU) & his Ed.D. from Washington U. (St. Louis). In World War II, Lou served as a navy classification specialist & later spent two years with the VA as a vocational counselor.
Lou's educational career spanned four decades. He was a charter member of the Missouri Personnel & Guidance Association, serving as trustee & president. He played a key role in organizing the Missouri Counselor Association, serving as its second president. He assumed duties as Assistant Principal & Director of Guidance at Clayton High School (Clayton, MO) in 1948. During his 19-year tenure there, Lou also was a visiting professor in the summers at Washington U., U. of Michigan, Ohio U., Marquette, Northwestern State U. of Louisiana, Kent State, San Diego State, Bucknell & Florida State. In 1967 he became Division Chair, Counseling & Guidance with the St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley where he remained until his retirement in 1981.
Married for 49 years, Lou is now reunited with his wife Edith Jensen Guese, who preceded him in death on February 9, 1995. He is survived by his daughters, Karen & Mark Snyder (St Louis), & Lucia & Kenneth Copeland (OKC); four grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as "GoodDaddy": Erin (Snyder) & Jeff Saxsma (Troy, MI), Sara (Copeland) & Kevin Shalin (Little Rock, AR), Todd & Molly Snyder (St. Louis), & Rachel (Copeland) & Scott Skiba (Greenville, NC); & five great-grandchildren: Natalie & Sydney Shalin, Keegan & Clara Snyder, & Ella Skiba. Lou is also survived by his loving companion for more than 15 years, Ardis Buder.
Lou spent his last 5 years in OKC where he touched the hearts of many. The family is deeply indebted to his caregivers at the Palliative Care Center at the VA Hospital & at the Mansion at the Waterford, especially Jean, Nicha, Sharon, Benice, Juanita, Corey, and his dining mate, Henry Roche.
A Private Service for the family will be held at a later date. Memorial gifts may be made in Dr. Lucius E. Guese's name to the Clayton Education Foundation (#2 Mark Twain Cir, St. Louis, MO, 63105) or the .
