Lucy Alexander Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 13, 2012.

Lucy Blackwell Alexander, 95, of Cary, NC, widow of the late Paul Orville Alexander, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 in Cary, NC. Mrs. Alexander was born in Beverlyville, VA, a daughter of the late Woodley Crocker and Lucy Briscoe Barber Blackwell.

She attended Westhampton College of the University of Richmond and graduated from George Washington University, Washington, DC. From 1942-1946, she served as an officer (Lieut.) in the US Navy (WAVES) during which time she met her husband whom she married in 1946. Mrs. Alexander worked at the District of Columbia Public Library and the National Institutes of Health. She and her husband lived in Kensington, MD for many years. In 1970, they moved to N. Myrtle Beach, SC to enjoy retirement. After her husband's death in 1998, Mrs. Alexander moved to Cary, NC in 2001 to be close to her daughter and granddaughter.

She was a charter member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in N. Myrtle Beach, a member of the Grand Strand WAVES and a former member of the Surf Golf and Beach Club.

Mrs. Alexander loved God, her family, the Commonwealth of Virginia and any beach, but especially Ocean Drive, SC. She also loved the Atlanta Braves, Chesapeake Bay blue crabs, high heels, dancing and her cocktail hour bourbon and cigarette. Her family knows she is enjoying all of them again.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Woodley Alexander Mathis and granddaughter, Kathryn Alexander Mathis, both of Raleigh, NC.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Woodley Crocker Blackwell, Jr. and Moreau Philip Blackwell.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 23, 2012 in the Auditorium of Glenaire Retirement Community, 4000 Glenaire Circle, Cary, NC.

A second memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in N. Myrtle Beach, SC at a later date where she will be inurned beside her husband in the church columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 801 11th Ave. North, N. Myrtle Beach, SC 29582 or St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 221 Union St., Cary, NC 27511.
