Mr. Luther William Goodman 94 of Rockwell, passed away on May 6, 2013 at the VA Medical Center. Born on April 7, 1919 in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Charlie Clinton and Mary J. Smith Goodman. Mr. Goodman attended Rowan County Schools and was a longtime member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church where he was a former usher and councilman. He served his country in the US Army during WWII where he earned a service medal with 2 bronze stars, good conduct medal, purple heart and the WWII victory medal. Mr. Goodman retired as a fixer at Cannon Mills Plant #8. During his leisure time, he loved traveling, reading and growing pumpkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Lucille Shillinglaw Goodman on April 19, 1997, a sister Dorothy Atwell, and grandchild Kandy Wiles on July 13, 1985. Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Marion "Wayne" Goodman (Beverly) of Salisbury, Patsy Wiles (Jack), Dianne Goodman (Ray) both of Rockwell and Alice Selle (Chris) of Hartsville S.C. He is also survived by his brother Clifford Goodman of Salisbury, 13 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 6:00 til 8:00 at Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home in China Grove with funeral on Friday at 4:00 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church with Revs. William Ketchie and Floyd Bost, ministers. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Rowan County Honor Guard will perform military honors. Memorials may be made to St. Pauls Lutheran Church 205 S. Pauls Church Rd. I didn't know Mr. Goodman but, I was a friend of his grand daughter Kandy back at Rockwell Elementry. Kandy was a very nice girl, I know she must have had a very nice family as well.

Papaw lived a long and fruitful life. He was wise, kind, hard-working (old school style), compassionate and humble. He nobly served his country and his family and he loved them both. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
