Luther Denny Mercer, 80, of Apex, NC passed away Tuesday evening, March 6, 2012, with family by his side. He was born to Luther Wesley and Geneva (Jones) Mercer in Moundsville, WV on March 8, 1931. Denny had great love for his family and friends. He never hesitated to talk to anyone and everyone liked him. Denny's passion was flying. He received his pilot's license at age 17. He was co-founder of Experimental Aircraft Association 1114 in Apex/Cary. He owned various small airplanes throughout his life and introduced many to aerobatics. Luther Denny Mercer, 80, of Apex, NC passed away Tuesday evening, March 6, 2012, with family by his side. He was born to Luther Wesley and Geneva (Jones) Mercer in Moundsville, WV on March 8, 1931.

Denny had great love for his family and friends. He never hesitated to talk to anyone and everyone liked him. Denny's passion was flying. He received his pilot's license at age 17. He was co-founder of Experimental Aircraft Association 1114 in Apex/Cary. He owned various small airplanes throughout his life and introduced many to aerobatics. Living on a grass airfield in Apex, he always said, "When I die and go to Heaven, it will be a lateral move."

Denny is survived by his wife Rita Nalley Mercer; daughters Bonnie Mercer Quattlebaum (husband Karl) of Carolina Beach, NC, and Denise Mercer Kramer (husband Wayne) of Oakland, MD; step-daughter Angela Rasmussen (husband Dean) of Richmond, VA; grandchildren Jeff, Katie, Betsy, Haley, Annabelle, Rodney, and Eric; and three great grandchildren Dylan, Autumn and Jake. He is also survived by two brothers and one sister.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 11:00 am at Apex United Methodist Church, 100 S. Hughes St, Apex, NC. Burial will immediately follow in the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery, 724 Beaver Creek Rd, Apex, NC.

Following the Graveside, family will receive friends at the East end of Cox Field, 1616 Hwy 64 West, Apex, N.C.

Flowers are acceptable or memorial contributions may be made in Denny's name to Children's Flight of Hope, Inc., 205 New Edition Ct, Cary, N.C. 27511, or to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 724 Beaver Creek Rd, Apex, N.C. 27502
