Lynwood Earl Johnson Sr. of Asheville died at the Oaks of Mayview in Raleigh on April 7. Lynwood was born in Hookerton, NC and was the oldest son of the late Lois Lynwood Johnson and Helen Bright Johnson. He was a 1942 graduate of Hookerton High School. He enlisted in the Army in 1945, served with the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Division in Kaufburem, Germany in 1946, and with the 15th U.S. Constabulary in Heidelberg in 1947. Upon his discharge from the Army, he joined the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in March 1950 and married the love of his life, Mary Frances Craft on June 7, 1950. Lynwood Earl Johnson Sr. of Asheville died at the Oaks of Mayview in Raleigh on April 7. Lynwood was born in Hookerton, NC and was the oldest son of the late Lois Lynwood Johnson and Helen Bright Johnson. He was a 1942 graduate of Hookerton High School. He enlisted in the Army in 1945, served with the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Division in Kaufburem, Germany in 1946, and with the 15th U.S. Constabulary in Heidelberg in 1947. Upon his discharge from the Army, he joined the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in March 1950 and married the love of his life, Mary Frances Craft on June 7, 1950. When the Korean War broke out, he was called up to serve with the 1st Calvary division of the 8th Army in Korea and then with the Japan Logistical Command in Sendai in 1951.

Upon his discharge from active service, Lynwood returned to the State Highway Patrol in High Point and later relocated to Asheville in 1968 until his retirement in 1984. After retirement, Lynwood attended Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute, graduating in 1986.

He was a deacon and active member at Biltmore Baptist Church for over 40 years, a volunteer with Post 70 of the American Legion in Asheville, a member of the Korean War Veterans Association and a member with the U.S. Constabulary Association.

Lynwood was preceded in death by his wife Frances. He is survived by his sons Lynwood (Lenny) Earl Johnson, Jr and his wife Mary of Belmont and Gary Thomas Johnson and his wife Kalen of Raleigh. He is also survived by his brother Alton of Little Washington, his sister in laws Elizabeth Craft of Wilson and Bet Messer of Emerald Isle, seven grandchildren and thirteen nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to acknowledge the tremendous love and support Lynwood and Frances received over the years from Kitty Wilson and Marshall Muse along with other members of Biltmore Baptist Church. Also the family wishes to thank Will Shoulars of Sunrise of Raleigh along with the staffs at the Oaks of Mayview and Hospice of Wake Country for their loving care in his final days.

Family and friends will receive visitors in the Parlor of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church at 10:00 am on Friday April 11, followed by a worship service celebrating his life at 11:00 a.m. There will be a graveside service at Walstonburg Cemetery in Walstonburg, NC at 2:30 p.m.
