M. Fuhrmeister Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2017.

Marianne Fuhrmeister of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on September 10, 2017 at the age of 96. She was predeceased by husband of 64 years, Lou, her parents, Frances and Mildred Schwendemann and a sister, Katherine Horn. She is survived by her brothers, Don and Leroy Schwendemann, her son, Jim (Cindy), daughter, Jan (George), grandchildren, Chris (Sally), Will, Becky (Daniel), and Reuel, and two great granddaughters, Abby and Nora, and numerous nieces, a nephew, and grandnieces and nephews. Marianne was born in Otho, Iowa and grew up on the farm that is still an actively farmed by Leroy and his family, it's a century farm having been in the family for more than 100 years. Growing up, Marianne attended public schools and was very active in 4-H, played high school basketball, and was a cheerleader for the boys' basketball team. She attended 2 years of college in Ft. Dodge, Iowa and was a cheerleader for the football team. Marianne served in the Waves (U.S. Navy) during World War II. After dating several years, she and Lou were married in Florida prior to his deployment on a Navy destroyer. After the war, Marianne and Lou moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he was employed by Monsanto and she became chief evening operator at the telephone company. Lou and Marianne adopted their children, Jim and Jan, from the Methodist Children's Home. They were very involved in their children's lives, Marianne was a Girl Scout leader, active in PTA, a Cub Scout Den leader, Sunday School teacher, and organized regular family camping vacations. While living in Chicago, Marianne was a real estate broker and member of the Million Dollar Sales Club her first year. She was a competitive flower arranger and was certified as a flower show judge. She played tennis, golf and bridge and always tried to win every game. She loved the social and competitive sides of competing in these activities. She was very much a "people person". She held 3 things dear to her heart: her faith, her family, and her membership in P.E.O., a women's philanthropic organization (she was an active member for more than 50 years). She encouraged her children to be the best they could be and deeply loved them and Lou until her last breath. She taught her children compassion toward others. That is her true legacy. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home & Cemetery in Pelham, Al. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
