Mabel Edna Stentz-Pettit(Collins), 87, died April 6, 2014. She was born in April 29, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Percy and Mabelle Stentz. Her brother, James Stentz, a pilot for American Airlines, predeceased her. Mabel graduated in 1945 from South Eastern High School in Detroit. She married Roy Collins on April 24, 1948 and later married her second husband, the late Marvin Pettit, on November 29, 1975. She worked for the Macomb Intermediate School District as a paraprofessional for 18 years. She was born in April 29, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Percy and Mabelle Stentz. Her brother, James Stentz, a pilot for American Airlines, predeceased her. Mabel graduated in 1945 from South Eastern High School in Detroit. She married Roy Collins on April 24, 1948 and later married her second husband, the late Marvin Pettit, on November 29, 1975.
She worked for the Macomb Intermediate School District as a paraprofessional for 18 years. Mabel was a passionate advocate for teachers' rights and established the MISD paraprofessional's union where she served as president for many years.
She also was an avid gardener, a volunteer at church, an environmental rights advocate, and a fanatic tea drinker.
She is survived by her three children: Dr. Jay Collins (Jan), Melody Perrin (Gerald), and Cheryl Gawlik (Mark).Her 11 grandchildren: Jason Collins, Janelle Collins, Mallory Collins, Eden Collins, Kai-Lynn Perrin-Rim (Dean), Mei-Ling Perrin-Thomas (Brad), Noah Perrin, Noelle Perrin, Tara-Lee Perrin, Megan Gawlik, and Hillary Gawlik. Also three great-grandchildren: Lael Rim, Levi Thomas, and Liam Thomas.
Mabel has chosen to donate her remains to the University of Michigan Medical School. A memorial service in celebration of her life will occur at: Shelby Bible Church. 47905 Hayes Rd, Shelby Township, Michigan on Tuesday April 8, 2014 at 11am. In honor of Mabel, donations can be made to Seasons Hospice Foundation or Shelby Bible Church missions.
