Mae Hampton Watt, of Atlanta, Georgia, gracefully passed away at the age of 94 on March 19, 2014.  Daughter of William Wade Hampton Jr and Mae McMillan Hampton  and sister of Judge William Wade Hampton III.  She was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in Economics at the Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee, moved to Atlanta, Georgia after World War II, and became an integral member of the Atlanta community. Mae met her husband as a camp counselor at Camp Keyston in Brevard, NC. She was an active member of the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where she served on the Guild of Christ Child, vested the acolytes, and assisted with the Junior Choir. Mrs. Watt and her husband, Mr. Harvey W. Watt, Sr. were founding members of Cherokee Country Club where Mrs. Watt holds the distinguished honor of being the first woman to make a hole-in-one. She was a proud and active member of the Kappa Delta Sorority and was inducted into the Diamond Circle in August 2013 for 75 years of membership & service.

Mrs. Watt loved to spend her time visiting and traveling with friends, skiing children behind the boat at Kingsley Lake, and watching her beloved University of Florida Gators and Florida State University Seminoles: only recently missing her first rivalry game.  As President of the Wives WING of the Aerospace Medical Association, she traveled to Israel and graced the international community with her southern charm by concluding her remarks and wishing her listeners well with a warm “Shalom Y’all.” With her behind the wheel, thirteen (13) friends skied at the same time setting a current Kingsley Lake record that was only later surpassed by Cypress Gardens.  Mrs. and Mr. Watt circled the globe many times over with friends.  Mrs. Watt water skied, played roller hockey, snow skied, cooked, baked, needle pointed, taught her son how to shoot, fly fished, golfed, stressed etiquette, camped, played bridge, bird hunted, played tennis/badminton, swam, boated, sailed, and only took one flight lesson from her husband from which they “came down not speaking.”

Above all else, Mrs. Watt was a loving and doting wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt.  She was known for her bright blue eyes and completely white hair that turned in her early thirties.  Every two years, she would organize a family reunion at Kingsley Lake where family from all over the world would travel to visit and say “Hey, Mae!”  She has left her family and friends with a legacy of love, class, and humor which can never be surpassed.

Mrs. Watt was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Harvey W. Watt, Sr. and her daughter, Robin Hampton Watt.  She is survived by her son, Harvey W. Watt, Jr.; her daughter, Helen Watt Alston; and her three grandchildren, Harvey W. Watt, III, Robin Hampton Alston, and Mary Katherine Watt Tinsley.

Services for Mrs. Mae Hampton Watt will be held on Monday, March 24, 2014 at 11:00am at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 435 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Ga 30308.  Graveside services will be held in Gainesville, Florida at a later date. The family kindly requests that donations be made to her beloved church, Seminoles, Gators, or KD in lieu of flowers.
