Neighbor

Madelyn Troxclair

Ms. Honey was such a generous, warm-hearted person, a wonderful neighbor to my family and like a "second mother" to me. She not only taught me to play piano but nurtured my love for the arts, especially music. She took me one time to see La Boheme, my first introduction to opera. When I needed someone to listen, she suggested a walk, and she energetically led the way while we sorted out what was on my mind. She was an inspiring role model in so many ways, embarking on a successful career in teaching French after raising a family, always giving to those around her, to family, neighbors and community. She was a very special person. I will always love her and cherish the memories I have of her.

As the years pass by I have forgotten lots of events and people but I still think of and remember Miel with much fondness and the good times we shared still make me smile.

To the family of "Madame Babin":
My mind is filled with fantastic memories of my days as a 7th and 8th grade French student at E. J. Gay Elementary School. Madame Babin was certainly a teacher who so inspired us with her energy, intelligence, poise, and support. To this day, (some 39 years later!), I still find myself reciting the french dialogues and singing the little songs she taught me! My prayers are with all of you at this time.
Accorder le repos éternel vers elle, ô Seigneur. Et, peut lumière perpétuelle brille sur elle. Qu'elle repose en paix. Que son âme et de toutes les âmes des fidèles défunts, par la miséricorde de Dieu, repose en paix. Amen.

Dear Susie and Luke,
It is often said that we must each answer two questions before we are allowed into Heaven. "Did you find Joy in your life" and "Did you bring Joy to the life of someone else." Without a doubt, Honey Babin can answer "YES" to both questions. When I think of the people who have been role models for me, I always include your Mom, Ms. Honey. She always had something interesting to talk about, something fascinating she was reading or learning or something new and exciting she was anticipating. I cannot express the Joy she added to my life and that I carry in my heart today through her example. Honey and my Mom wrote to each other and remained in touch as true friends. Her memories of Honey were a great joy in her later years. We have all been truly blessed by the life of Honey Babin. With loving thoughts, Betty (Collet) Steppe

My deepest sympathy to the Babin family. Ms. Honey was a very special person and was loved by everyone in the Troxclair family. I have fond memories of visiting with her when she was oil painting and she was always giving me and Rick Supple cookies or brownies. She was loved by all. My thoughts and prayers to all of the Babin family to help you through this difficult time.

Susie and Lukie,

Because of my family's intimate friendship with the Babins, your mom and your aunt Flo were able to pressure my dad into agreeing I might take music lessons in 1957 when I was 12 yrs. old. This happened at one of Papaw Babin's Sunday soirées featuring Flo and Honey on the piano and everyone else singing and dancing for hours to oldies like "The Sheik of Araby" . Your mom even gave me her student slot with Miss Dolores Mattingly, a Newcomb alumna, because she wanted me to have the finest music teacher in the area and to start right away, perhaps before my dad changed his mind. Honey picked me up many times to attend the community concerts in Donaldsonville. She encouraged me and inspired me to use my talents. What a blessing she was to me. That push to music profoundly altered my life as it was then. Music still occupies me and refreshes me. Her example has led me to advise many youth to identify and pursue their abilities and talents, musical and otherwise. May she rest in peace. Thanks Miss Honey. I'm planning to see you all Monday. Love, SPORT

Although I am so sad to learn that Miel has passed on,I could not help but smile while reading the messages left by her friends. We met in graduate school, almost 40 years ago! Most of us were in our late 20's and at first we thought Miel was "old" to be coming back to school. But we soon learned that she was a hoot, full of spunk and energy. When younger grad students were moping around and griping, she would tell delicious stories and jokes and share her excitement about the next lesson plan for her students. In spirit and energy she outdid us all. She was also truly beautiful, inside and out and her professionalism was impeccable!

Since then, my own 51 years have come and long gone and now 51 looks pretty young! At whatever age, Miel was always special and oh so talented. I never met anyone who came close to matching our inimitable friend, Miel.
There are lots of lucky angels who will now delight in the presence of the one who graced our lives for so many years.

My deepest sympathy and my prayers are with the Babin family. Mrs. Honey was a shining memory of my childhood. I cannot think about my early years on Babin Dr. and not remember the welcoming, beautiful smile that Mrs. Honey always greeted me with. She would speak French to me and I would try to repeat her, often failing to meet her standards. Regardless of my success or fail, she hugged me and gave me a smile. I still have my French storybook "Lapinou" that she gave to me. My mother considered her a very dear friend and spoke so lovingly of her. She was a kind and generous woman who touched my entire family. I will always be grateful that she was a part of our lives and we all loved her. God bless you all.
Love, Simone Troxclair Giroir

To Ms. Honey's family:
It is so sad to hear that our beloved "Miss Honey" has passed. She was such a loving neighbor to all of us Troxclairs, and especially nurturing to me during difficult times. She was a dear friend to our Mama Taline, and they spent much time practicing for the choir or singing the Fred Waring songs for Mr. Joffrey's programs.I clearly recall her strong, true soprano voice. It was Ms. Honey who taught me to play the piano as a special Mother's Day present to Mama. She was always offering to feed us something special she had made. Ms. Honey was immensely talented, bright and giving, and a woman who made a tremendous difference in our lives. I wish I could be there to attend her funeral, but please know that my prayers and sympathy are with you at this time.

My thought and prayers are with you in your time of sorrow.

She was a wonderful neighbor and very close friend of my parents, especially our mother. Mama always spoke with such love and gratitude towards her for her kindess and generosity towards us. I have so many memories, too many to post here, but just know that she will never be forgotten. God bless you all.
