Obituary

Born on April Fools Day in 1940, Maren had a joy for life from the start. She was sandwiched in between two brothers, Buck and Jim, and learned early on to tease or be teased and to laugh and the world laughs with you. As her niece Cynthia says, she had the kind of beautiful laugh that, when you heard it, you would either laugh with her or want to know what she was laughing about. Her infectious laugh, her beautiful smile, and her sparkling blue eyes are what lit up any room that she entered. Maren was born in Wisconsin to Adelaide and Roman Joseph Weinfurter and moved to Hollywood and then to South Gate before the age of five. ...

She graduated from South Gate High School and worked for the City of South Gate for 28 years as the Executive Secretary to the City Manager. She may not have traveled far in her 74 years but she left a legacy of generosity and loving kindness in the lives of those she knew. Her daughter and son, Melinda and Greg, benefited in immeasurable ways from her unconditional love and her generosity of spirit.

Maren married Patrocinio Carpenter, Jr. in the year 2000. That year was a celebration of her retirement, her wedding, and her triumph over health issues. With the unwavering support of her sister-in-law Judy, that walk down the aisle was a joyful and successful one. That decade produced the new loves of her life-her grandchildren and her grandnieces and nephews. The twinkle in Maren's eye, the kindness in her smile, and the love in her heart was magnified by the babies in her life whom she cherished dearly.

And, it is all of you who are reading this that kept that sparkle alive and gleaming in Maren. Even though she faced great hardships and struggles with her health, she loved her family and friends more. She loved her lunches with her dearest friends, her monthly family birthdays gatherings, her recitals, and plays, and secret stalker outings with Mary Joe. She loved being with you, caring for you, lending you a hand, or just a shoulder to snuggle up against.

The last years of her daily life were especially sweet. They were filled with the precious, tender moments only a grandmother knows: long hours of soothing a crying grandbaby, playtime at bathtime, stories at bedtime, and singing and singing and singing. Nana wrote special songs for Chloe and Molly highlighting their unique qualities and sang them to sleep with those songs. Nicole has said that she learned from Maren about the true unconditional love of a mother. When Molly was born, a new best friend entered her world. They giggled together, cried together, shared stories as they spent their days and nights together. Her joy was multiplied with each hug and kiss.

Whether it was an Easter egg hunt, Christmas morning, a stroll through a rose garden or coffee and a cozy conversation, like her own mother, Maren had a way of elevating every moment with her amazing ability to celebrate life.

She will be missed.
