She grew up in NW Portland and attended Beaverton High School where she played several sports including tennis and softball. After graduating from high school Margaret continued to play softball in a semi-professional league, most notably for the Perkins Oil team. In 1951 Margaret was set up on a blind date with Carl Fishback. After a short courtship the couple was married on December 16, 1951. Margaret worked at Montgomery Ward for a time until she and Carl started their family.
In addition to raising four children Margaret began keeping cows and growing a variety of nursery goods including dahlias for cut flowers, bare root fruit and shade trees. She also worked for Motz and Son Nursery for 30 plus years until she retired to help her children with their own ventures, Fishback Nursery and Karen's Gardens.
Margaret loved to attend her grandchildren's sporting events, driving as far as Virginia and Florida and flying to Connecticut. She and Carl enjoyed the scenic route whether it was a four hour drive along back roads to Tillamook or a road trip to Alaska. Margaret also loved to feed people. Sunday lunches and dinners were very important to her. Even though she was incredibly shy she managed to invite everyone over, at times having up to 20 people at Sunday dinner. She was also known to start the occasional food fight.
She will be missed by her sons, Dale (Lisa) of Hillsboro, Dan (Terri) of Banks, and Keith (Jeanne) of Banks; daughter, Karen (Tom) Lawhorn of Beaverton; brothers, Bud (Venita) Taennler of Tigard and Ray (Kay) Taennler of Forest Grove; grandchildren, James, Sean, Hannah, Micah, Mandie, Danny, and David Fishback, Elizabeth Schaar, and Brian and Sarah Lawhorn; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Elise and Jubilee Fishback; and a large extended family. Her husband, Carl, preceded her in death in 2002.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Bethany Baptist Church, where she was a life time member, 4545 NW Kaiser Road, Portland, on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 3 PM. Private interment will be in Skyline Memorial Gardens. Arrangements under the direction of Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, Portland, OR.
