Margaret Alice Andress Gilbert died Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Timberlane Health and Rehabilitation. She was born April 30, 1918 in Union County to Lucy Bendette Ballard and Bertram Knox Andress. She graduated from El Dorado High School, Dodd College, and Louisiana State University, where she earned a double master's degree in musicology and library science. During the Second World War, she worked for the US Civil Service at naval and army bases as a librarian. After the war, Margaret accepted a job as the first music librarian at Baylor University and then worked as a librarian in Chicago, Amarillo, and Dallas until she returned to...
Margaret Alice Andress Gilbert died Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Timberlane Health and Rehabilitation. She was born April 30, 1918 in Union County to Lucy Bendette Ballard and Bertram Knox Andress. She graduated from El Dorado High School, Dodd College, and Louisiana State University, where she earned a double master's degree in musicology and library science.
During the Second World War, she worked for the US Civil Service at naval and army bases as a librarian. After the war, Margaret accepted a job as the first music librarian at Baylor University and then worked as a librarian in Chicago, Amarillo, and Dallas until she returned to El Dorado to teach music at Hugh Goodwin Elementary School. After she retired, she continued to pursue her love of learning and travel.
Margaret was a member of the First United Methodist Church, The Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, The DAR, Pi Beta Phi Sorority, Phi Theta Kappa Fraternity, and Delta Kappa Theta Sorority.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, W.K. Andress, J.H. Andress, and E.L. Andress; and four sisters, Grace Andress, Nellie Lawrence, Irene Ruple, and Nedra Miller.
She is survived by her nephew, Dr. Will K. Andress (Julia Ann) of Shreveport; four nieces, Carol Ruple Baker of New Orleans, Betty Andress Ballard of Dallas, Martha Ruple Beebe (John S.) of El Dorado, and Sara Miller Richardson (Sam M.) of El Dorado and Little Rock; and many great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, 2012, at Arlington Memorial Park with under the direction of Young's Funeral Directors with Father Chuck Chapman and Rev. Mike Blanchard officiating.
