Margaret Hibbert Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 9, 2013.

Margaret "Peggy" Eunice Thomas Hibbert died on November 8, 2013 at the age of 66, in her home in Raleigh, NC. She fought ALS with hope, courage, dignity, and peace.

Born to Paul Glennford Thomas and Emma Eunice Jordan Thomas on July 3, 1947 in Sumter, South Carolina, Peggy graduated Cum Laude from Queens College, where she was a Dana scholar and President of the Student Body.

Peggy met her beloved Carl on a blind date. Known for their joy in "cutting a rug" on the dance floor, they married in 1970 and moved to Winston Salem, where Peggy pursued her Masters Degree in Psychology at Wake Forest University. The couple spent several wonderful summers working at Camp Seafarer.

After moving to Raleigh, Peggy taught kindergarten before her children were born. She completed her Doctorate of Education in Counselor Education at North Carolina State University in 1992 and accepted the position of Parent Educator and Demonstration Preschool Coordinator at Project Enlightenment. She found her life's work in supporting families with young children, defining a model of early intervention across the state and nation which had significant impact in the field of early intervention and early childhood education.

Peggy took great delight in her many volunteer roles. At White Memorial Presbyterian Church she served as Sunday School teacher, Chair of the Youth Ministry Committee, mission participant, Deacon and Elder. She was an active volunteer in Special Olympics: golf caddy for her son, Global Messenger speech coach, and avid parent and fan. She was a well known "Drama Mama" for S.T.A.R. (Special Theatre Arts of Raleigh).

Peggy leaves behind her husband, Carl Woodall Hibbert, Sr; son Carl Woodall Hibbert, Jr.; daughter Jennifer Jordan Hibbert Coggins and son-in-law Anthony Ray Coggins of Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren, Rainer, Adelaide, and Emma; sisters Polly (and Reed) Shirley of Houston, TX, and Betty Lee (and Kenny) Barwick of Columbia, SC and their families. Peggy also leaves many extended family members and dear friends.

A woman of deep faith, Peggy was passionate about the healthy growth and development of children of all abilities. Valuing relationships, she enjoyed many circles of friends. She loved to explore God's world through traveling, hiking, playing tennis or golf, and snow skiing.

A Witness to the Resurrection for Peggy will be held at 2:00 on Tuesday, November 12th, at White Memorial Presbyterian Church. Visitation for friends and family will occur in the church Gathering Space from 4:00 to 7:00 on Monday, November 11. Private interment will be in the church Memorial Garden. The family requests that memorials be made to Project Enlightenment Foundation, Special Olympics of North Carolina, Queens University of Charlotte to The Queens Fund and White Memorial Presbyterian Church for mission and youth work.

I am truly sorry for your loss of a great friend, wife, and mother. Peggy always lit up the room when she entered. To say that my mother treasured Peggy's friendship and support throughout her life, is an understatement. Peggy was a truly great lady. We will miss her. I was so sorry when my work schedule did not allow me to attend the service at WMPC. Know that Carl, Carl Jr., Jennifer and the rest of your family are in the thoughts and prayers of the Hubbard Family.

There are very few people of whom it can truly be said that "To know her is to love her". Peggy was such a person. I will always treasure our friendship that developed as Carl Jr. and Dana dated. I grew as a person as I experienced her unconditional love and nonjudgmental attitude about people of all abilities and walks of life. She will be sorely missed, but she leaves behind so many treasures of the spirit-- her kindness, compassion, courage, determination, respect, hope, JOY, love, and peace. We will continue to hold her family close to us.
