A long-time resident of the Sacramento area, Margot died Thursday the 22nd of March, 2012, at the Mercy San Juan Medical Center. Born in 1942 in Oakland, California, Margot attended both Loretto Heights College in Denver, Colorado and Holy Names College in Oakland, California. She received her Bachelor of Arts degrees in Economics and Sociology in 1963 from Holy Names College.
Margot began her career by spending 15 years helping people in need while she was working for the City of Oakland as a community organizer and relocation advisor. In 1981, she moved to Sacramento, working for the California State Legislature as part of the Tour Guide Program at the California State Capitol. During that time, she worked with other staff members to create, produce and perform a children's puppet show describing the history of the State of California; that show was used for many years and seen by thousands of people. In 1991, she changed careers and worked for the California State Board of Equalization as a business tax representative, where she remained until her retirement in 2002.
Always a person who enjoyed giving to those in need, Margot has performed volunteer work in a number of ways throughout her life. She worked as an emergency loan officer in the City of Oakland after the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989. Since 2003, she has enjoyed weekly volunteer work with the Sacramento Food Bank, working as part of their Clothes Closet program to give clothing to people in need. Margot also loved searching for and finding good food, traveling to new places, visiting with her family, shopping at both Corti Brothers and Taylor's markets, and playing with her grandson.
She is survived by her son Drew Merz and his wife Kathleen Merz, their son Connor Merz, her son Geoff Ward and his wife Cynthia Feliciano, her sister Kathy Brady and Kathy's husband Tom Brady, as well as their children and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her father Bernard Abrott and her mother Margaret 'Maudie' Abrott.
Family and friends are invited to the visitation on Tuesday 3/27 from 5-8PM with Vigil service and recitation of the rosary at 7PM at HARRY A. NAUMAN & SON LAND PARK FUNERAL CHAPEL, 4041 Freeport Blvd., Sacramento. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:30PM on Wednesday 3/28 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 3263 1st Ave., Sacramento.
In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be given to the Sacramento Food Bank, at Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services, 3333 Third Ave., Sacramento, CA 95817. They are also several other ways to donate online listed on their web site at www.sacramentofoodbank.org/support/donate.html

I feel that Margot "took me under her wing" and was like a sister to me. She introduced me to my first luxurious trip to St. Helena winery almost 27 years ago and I have cherished her friendship over all these years. I will miss hearing her voice when she would call me at work or at home with her wonderful adventures and stories! Margot shared stories about Connor, Kathleen, Drew, Geoff and Cynthia! I felt as if I was part of her family! But I was part of her tour guide family! Margot will be greatly missed!

Dear Margot, I am grateful we got to see you in Los Angeles a couple times in recent years. It was especially nice to see you with your grandson. Anyone who saw you together could tell how much you loved him. My heart goes out to him as I know he will miss you terribly. I'm sure if he listens quietly, he will be able to feel your presence still with him as you smile down on him and all of us from heaven.

My memories of Margot span six decades from elementary school in Oakland to the present. She always had a smile and a humorous memory to share with me.'
She showed great compassion for the less fortunate in her work and her life.
Margot was loved by her family and will be missed by all who knew her.
