Marguerite B. Smith, age 91
Born: November 10, 1922
Marguerite was born in Jacksonville, FL but her family moved to Kissimmee, where her brother Henry Louis Jr was born, and then they all moved to Orlando where she attended first grade at the Delaney School. The family eventually settled in Port Tampa where she grew up attending the Westshore School and then graduating from Plant High School. Her first job was at the J.C. Penny department store in Tampa. She met and married Melford Wayne Smith in 1948 and the couple lived in Atlanta, Georgia for many years. Wayne Smith (as he was known) was in the Air Force during both WWII and the Korean War.
After leaving the military, they purchased a house in College Park in 1953 where they lived for 46 years and were members of the College Park Baptist Church as well as many fraternal organizations in the community. In 1999 they sold their house and moved to a condo on Lake Underhill Rd.
Marguerite was inducted into Eastern Star at 20 and remained active with them until her death. She has the Grand Cross of Color in the Order for Rainbow for Girls. She served as secretary of Mokanna Lodge Chapter 283 O.E.S. for 20 years and then became a member of the Pioneer Chapter 99. When Wayne joined the Shriners Marguerite became involved as well. She is a Past Queen of the Athaliah Temple and served as a Supreme Officer in the Supreme Temple of Daughters of the Nile in 2006. She was particularly proud of her work with the Shriners Hospital for Children, where, among other things, she cut hundreds of patterns for clothes for the babies. Marguerite was also a valued volunteer for the Orange County Sheriff's Office assisting with their seniors program and went into the office at least twice a week for 16 years.
She gave so much to the community, to her friends and to family. There was, and is, no one quite like Marguerite.

Marguerite was best friend to our mom, Wanda Booth, who was in Eastern Star with her. When I was a little kid, she and Wayne would take me out to dinner and say, "order whatever you want." One time I ordered lobster tails, the most expensive thing on the menu. When Mom found out later, she was horrified! Marguerite and Wayne thought it was hilarious and always encouraged me to order it from then on.

As an Eastern Star Sister, I came to know Marguerite through Betty Boyer here in Pioneer Chapter #99. It made me very happy to see Marguerite when she attended our meetings when she could. Even to see her at DON. She had a confident and friendly presence which I appreciated. She is missed. May her family find comfort in their memories of her and strength in knowing that others care. With sincere sympathy, Diana L. Johnson, Pioneer Chapter No. 99.

I know its not uncommon to hear the trait a 'force' when someone passes. I've mulled over other synonyms like power, strength, influence, energy and the like and Mimi truly embodied every single possibility after that semicolon in Websters.
Throughout my entire life Mimi was always there pushing me to better, encouraging me to think bigger and all the while spoiling me rotten. I could reminiscence for days and days about all the shirley temples she made just right (with endless cherries), the afternoon tea outing when she gave me my first pair of diamond earrings and I ate my weight in sugar cubes, remembering like yesterday her perfume while she put curlers in my hair, listening to top 40 on the patio, riding in the front seat of her giant white caddy to get sonnys bbq, her magical white christmas tree with tinsel, calling me ERIKA MARIE when I poked my sister (a lot), watching her put on her clown makeup to volunteer at the childrens hospital and endless more. Later in life I admired as she cared for Wayne Buddy and how she didn't miss a beat. I laughed and cried at her 90th birthday gala sitting by her side and feeling her squeeze my hands each time she smiled.
I've learned it truly takes a village and I'm very fortunate my village included a very special lady that lived next door on Yates St in Orlando FL.
I love you Mimi. The world is a better place because you were in it and I'm a better person for being part of your world.

I was in OES with Marguerite for many years . I would see her occasionally in
Publix or at a Sheriff's event. She would always remind me to return to chapter
meetings, which I never did. We shouldn't be too busy to revisit old friends.

Your Orange County Sheriff's Office family is saddened by your passing, but are truly blessed to have known you for all those years you volunteered with us. Your kindness, generosity, and smile will be missed by us all, but we know the lord now has a special angel to help him.
