To Maria R. Monge, these were more than just words. They were foundation for her legacy – a strong family legacy that touched people throughout the San Bernardino community for nearly two generations.

Maria passed away March 20 at the age of 100. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rafael. She is survived by her sister, Blanca Moreno; daughter Gloria Aguirre & husband Fidel; son Ralph & wife Nancy; daughter Sally Garcia & husband Javier; and daughter Connie Anderson & husband Frank; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a large, growing extended family.

Born on June 28, 1912 in Jecori, Sonora, Mexico, she first immigrated to the United States with her children in 1953, moving to San Bernardino, Calif. In 1967, she opened a shop selling bridal and formal dresses, a store that would affect the lives of thousands before it closed in 2000.

Her shop wasn't just a place for bridal gowns and prom dresses. It was a family endeavor in every sense of the word, and she wouldn't have it any other way. Amid the hustle and bustle of orders, sales and alterations, the sounds of family were everywhere. Laughter. Grandchildren giggling. Mischief. Love.

Mary played ring-leader for this glorious circus. Family and business intertwined daily. Every family member spent time in the shop; nearly every family member worked there. And with each passing year, the shop became more of an institution in the community.

Though she is gone, she lives on in many ways. Her strength is a beacon to those left behind. She demanded each child and grandchild push to meet their potential. Her legacy is left in the lives of her family and in the lives of those she helped celebrate their love.

At the end of each business day, Mary would loudly cheer, "gling, gling, gling!" as her own personal "quitting time" bell. Her smile, her strength, and that sound live on in the two things she cared about most … Family and love. Familia y amor.

"Dear Ralph, I'm so very sorry to read of the loss of your mom. I never met her, but reading all the comments about her, she must have been a jewel in the..." Richard Valencia (Riverside, CA)
