Maria Devens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 11, 2013.

Maria Devens, beloved UIC Faculty, lived with great passion, empathy, and insight. Highly valued by our faculty, staff, and trainees, Dr. Devens was an exceptional behavioral scientist, a gifted clinical psychologist, and a supportive friend and ally. Dr. Devens was invaluable in the family medicine residency and in medical education. In her typical energetic fashion, Dr. Devens dedicated herself to improving relationships between doctors and patients through her work in the American Balint Society. She strove to create more robust support networks for physicians and encouraged more mindfulness in our workplace.

Dr. Devens' favorite words were "joy" and "grace." She sought joy and grace in all things and she brought them to many people. Dr. Devens lived a life of balance and helped us notice the beauty we might take for granted – whether it be a favorite color (purple was her choice), music (Baroque, and her beloved '80s), or a delicious, homemade dessert with a strong cup of tea.

Even in the depths of her illness, Dr. Devens remained steadfastly herself: thoughtful and generous. She assisted her colleagues, residents and students and took on new endeavors. Always the professional, she selflessly helped others even during her times of greatest need, and often reminded us to "embrace change" and appreciate what is good.

Cory Savage

to Maria's Family,

I wanted to express my deepest sympathy to you for the Maria's passing. I would occasionally send a message to Maria, as an old friend, and was met with a sad surprise yesterday. I hope that you are all healing from her loss.

I wanted you to know how much she impacted not only my life, but also the lives of my children (whom she never met).

Maria and I briefly dated from late 2004 to early 2005. She opened my eyes to so many wonderful experiences in that short time.

I am eternally grateful to have known Maria. She was a wonderful person, and a joy to be around. Even though we have not spoken in years, I still remember her and some of the "things" she would do or say.

I've read how others have commented regarding her music and style. Her cooking, and her taste. A couple of things that will ALWAYS remind me of Maria; a French press for making morning coffee, the music of Interpol and Bright Eyes and Cursive, Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections, homemade pizza with shrimp, broaches with purple, stories of vacationing in the south of France, Baroque music in local chapels, Old Jerusalem falafel. So, so much more.

You will be dearly missed, and thought of often.

Maria, It is seventeen months today that you left us and we miss you very much. You are in our daily thoughts and prayers. Love forever, Mom

Dear Jenny, Bob, and Devens Family,
My parents told me about Maria's illness, and were in awe of her strength and persistence. I have been out of touch with you since I moved out of the area, but Maria nevertheless left an indelible impression on me long ago, as a passionate, empathetic and intelligent young woman. I am so sorry for your loss. With love to you all, Jennifer Gabriel Weiler

I had the pleasure of working with Maria in college and she was truly a “delightful” person. She loved that word and taught me its truest meaning. Today, whenever I use it I still think of her. She took delight in everything and she brought you right along with her. I am so sorry that we lost touch as our lives took different paths. I remember her fondly, and I am inspired to see the wonderful influence she has had on others.

Dear Devens Family, I am so sorry for your loss.

I am grateful to have known and worked with Maria for 8 years at UIC. She was a true friend and colleague and always exemplified utmost professionalism, kindness and a commitment to her work. She was a true advocate for women's health; she was deeply committed to supporting and teaching family medicine residents. I am lucky to have learned so much from Maria.

Maria meant so much to us that it's impossible to convey her energy, enthusiasm, drive and strength in words. She didn't retrain her passions: alternative 80's music, opera, baroque, running, ice skating, dinners with friends, travel, her profession (she said she knew what she wanted to be when she was in high school), helping others achieve more, lending a sympathetic ear, spending time with her family, expressing herself through the fun of purple, and being joyful. She was called away from us too soon. And we will never stop missing her.

April 14, 2013

I had the good fortune of knowing Maria for the past two years. Throughout the ups and downs during that time, she maintained an inspiring optimism and courage. One of her more charming traits was a straightforwardness in which she visibly displayed her large heart on her sleeve. She buoyantly and excitedly went with any good news that she received, and stubbornly fought against and soldiered on against the cruel unpredictability of her disease. I learned much from her and came to admire her family's devotion and support through what I heard from Maria. To the family, I want you to know that you had a wonderful daughter and sister to be proud of forever, and that she was equally proud to have all of you and parents, brothers, and sisters.

Looking through this guest book, I see that many others share my thoughts and admiration for Maria. Others have also been deeply touched by her. No one, however, can fully share my feelings for such a special person with whom I had a special and unique professional and personal relationship. Her passing cannot take away all that we shared.

All my love to Mary Lou and Bob and the entire Devens family.

I am so saddened to hear of Maria's passing. She was a great friend to me in college and I remember quite fondly her sunny disposition, kindness and compassion. Many times she picked me up when I was down and cheered me on through difficult times. She had a wonderful sense of humor and never failed to bring a smile to my face. I cherish the memories of the time we had together. Though I regret that we lost touch in later years, I was honored to be her friend. My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this very difficult time.

Neither my husband nor I have ever actually met Maria (or her sibblings) but through her Mom and Dad I felt that I knew Maria so well. Mary Lou, Bob, their family and we and our family were going through a very difficult time in our lives and I believe it gave us peace to speak with Mary Lou because she really understood the sadness we were feeling. Our 6 year old twin nephew is now in a beautiful place with our Lord Jesus where Maria will be meeting with him. Maria is such a kind person I know Griffin with love being with her and he will be in such good hands.
Mary Lou and Bob, we met in such an unusual way, I believe God put us together to comfort each other. Maria is so beautiful and loved by so many, (no-one more than our Lord and Savior)and now she is with Him who will continue to LOVE HER. Our heartfelt prayers are with the entire Devens family. Love, Jim and Joan

I am so fortunate to have gotten to know Maria on both a personal and professional level. Professionally, Maria was so inspirational in her passion for her work. I was especially inspired by her concern for the psychological well-being of medical students and resident physicians. Maria greatly helped me in my transition to working at UIC. On a personal level, my whole family is very fortunate to have gotten to know Maria. She came to our home (and vice versa) a number of times. Our daughter affectionately called her "Aunt Maria". I found about her passing coming home from work. I thought I "got rid of all of my tears" but I broke down again when I told my wife and daughter. My daughter Arihi held me in a supportive quiet manner but then she herself broke down. I am very honored to be giving a presentation at the Society of Teachers of Family Medinine in a few weeks on a project inspired by Maria. Words don't express my level of sadness.

I hope it comforts you to know that however short Maria's time was here, she made a profound difference in the lives of so many, and because of her teaching, her impact will continue to be felt in countless lives. That is an inspiration. Her life's work, dedication, kindness, perseverance, strength, hopefulness, faith - she will always be a north star, ever guiding us in the right direction. You are all in my heart, in my thoughts, and in my prayers. I know that your faith, family, friends, your memories and pride in who Maria is, will sustain you in your grief. Know that you are loved. My deepest sympathy to Maria's family and friends, Maria was a teacher, mentor, colleague and amazing friend to me. I knew Maria for over a decade and was privileged to be her colleague and friend. We shared many stories of life, personal struggle and triumph! We also shared our strong interest for the French language (I am a native of Montreal, Canada). Maria, I will always love and miss you. Je t'aime...

To Maria's family: I worked with Maria over the last several years at UIC. She is the definition of dignity and professionalism and just plain sweetness--a true star. She will not be forgotten.
