In Liew of Sending Flowers, Please send Donations to Nazareth House
Our beloved mother Maria "Gloria" Goes passed away on March 16, 2014. Gloria was born on January 25, 1921 in Central Falls, Rhode Island to Antonio and Rosa Morreira. She was raised in Madeira, Portugal where she married and had a daughter Mary Jo and became a widow at a young age. Wanting a better life for herself, she immigrated to the United States with her daughter Mary Jo. She met her future husband, Joao Goes who had 3 children of his own. Gloria and Joao, together, had a daughter Judy. Gloria also raised her 2 step-sons from their early teenage years. Years later, her step-daughter and family immigrated to the United States from Portugal. Gloria always felt that her step-children were her "children" and not step-children.
Gloria worked many years as a cannery worker at Westgate Cannery, Van Camps Cannery and Bumble Bee Tuna.
Gloria was the matriarch of our family and was deeply loved by her family and many friends. As a devote Catholic, her life reflected a deep love of God. She will be remembered for her generosity, compassion and graciousness. At an early age in Portugal she did embroidery and learned to crochet once she retired. She was a great cook and baker. Everyone enjoyed Gloria's many special dishes.
Gloria is survived by her children Mary Lopez (Frank), Judy Williamson (Jerry), John Gois (Sharon), Joe Gois (Clara) and Martinha Abreu (Jordao) along with 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. at Saint Agnes Church, 1140 Evergreen Street, San Diego CA 92106 with burial immediately following at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Nazareth House, 6333 Rancho Mission Road, San Diego, Ca 92108 indicating in memory of Maria Gloria Goes.

Grandma Gloria, you are my inspiration and example in all things family. You raised your stepchildren as if they were your own. You welcomed my girls, Madison and Rachel into your heart as if they had be your born grand daughters. Your Grace and kindness are attributes I see in my John and I know he got that from you. We are all better people for knowing you and my committment to you is to continue to use you as my example.
Thank you for blessing us with your love.
You will always be in our hearts.

My darling grandma - you loved and you were loved... You lived your life with gratitude and honor, never bitterness. You are the few people I know that really counted your blessings in life. You understood that the real importance of life were the people and love surrounding you... I will try to walk your journey of life - by always honoring my blessings and being grateful for them. I love you forever and my heart misses you very much ??
