In Loving Memory of
Marie Elizabeth Atamaniuk (Zitariuk)

Marie was born, on the family farm, in Bluewing, Manitoba to Nicolas and Polly Zitariuk. She was the oldest of three other sisters and one brother. Sisters, Martha Williams and Marjorie Kerr, as well as her parents have predeceased her. Sister Marcella of Grand Prairie, Alberta and brother Jerry of Winnipeg, Manitoba survive her.

As a young girl, Marie moved to Kenora and worked at Ken-o-kee Lodge on the Keewatin Beach Road. Soon after her arrival, she met and married Mike Atamaniuk in 1950. Mike predeceased her in 1998. Surviving Marie is her daughter Lesia, husband Garth and daughters Rachael and Natalie Wolfe. Others who survive her are: sister in law Viola Atamaniuk and brothers in law Roy Williams and Percy Kerr as well as many nieces and nephews and their families of Fort St. John, B.C., Los Angelas, California and Eastern Ontario.

After attaining her grade 12 diploma at night school (Beaver Brae Secondary School), Marie worked as a bookkeeper at several local businesses and an accounting firm. Through Marie's life she was a member of several local Ukrainian clubs and she attended the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. She kept with her Ukrainian and Romanian traditions and languages. I turn those traditions reflected on her cooking, embroidery, sewing of costumes and dance. She loved to dance, both ethnically and to popular music of the time. Marie was an excellent sewer. She always had the prettiest party dresses and enjoyed sewing for family members.

After battling several addictions and illnesses in her life Marie's heart quickly weakened as a result of several complications and she passed away at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital with her family in attendance. Lesia and her family would like to thank Dr. Workman, Dr. Bowerman and the nurses of Third Floor East for their rapid concerns and responses and excellent, professional care during Marie's short stay at the hospital.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 30, 2013 with a luncheon to follow at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 429 2nd Street South in Kenora. A family burial will be held later in the day.
