Mariette Santos Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2018.

Mariette Gertrude (Francoeur) Santos, 84 years old, wife of Robert Rodrigues Santos passed away January 27, 2018 at Life Care of Raynham after having suffered a stroke in 2017. She developed neurovascular dementia due to the stroke, but continued to live a grateful life visited by those who loved her. Mariette was a homemaker to her children Cheryl G. Santos and Richard R. Santos. She was a long-time advocate for her children and others who had dyslexia in the Town of Bridgewater.

Mariette grew up in the North End of Fall River, Massachusetts with her father Ferdinand and mother Regina (Lapointe) both of Quebec, Canada. She lived with her family; Frank, Roland, Claire, Bob, George, Doris, (Mariette) Armand, Rene, and Irene. In her early youth Mariette worked as a seamstress, becoming one of the fastest zipper setters in the city of Fall River mills after leaving school at the end of the eighth grade. She enjoyed travel and went many places, including California, with her life-long friend Loraine (Dupuis) Amarantes.

Mariette loved to dance at Lincoln Park, which is where she met her husband of 57 years, Robert Santos. They were married June 11, 1960. Their daughter Cheryl was born in 1961 and son Richard in 1963. The family moved from Chicago to Massachusetts to be closer to both families. Mariette spent many years decorating cakes for family events. Her greatest joy was the annual Christmas Party she and her husband hosted for family and friends. She enjoyed catching up with nieces and nephews about the on-goings in their lives. She welcomed in the new family members with the same support as her own family.

Mariette also enjoyed a good ''conversation'' with her sister Claire and brothers Frank, Bob or Armand. Sometimes they were very loud conversations about life. Mariette was very generous over her lifetime, giving time and money to those in need inside and outside the family. In her personal time, she did ceramics, sewed and made crafts. She collected bells and giraffes as she loved the majestic and graceful movement of these animals. In later life became a member of the Swansea Red Hat Society.

Mariette would say, ''You can achieve anything in life that you want as long you continue to work hard for it, despite people telling you that you cannot reach your goal.'' This was her battle cry, pushing her children to go to college despite dyslexic struggles.

Her favorite song of inspiration was Rod Stewart's "Forever Young." She said, "This is what I want for my children and grandchildren to understand about my life's lesson.''

Mariette is survived by her beloved husband Robert. She will be dearly missed by daughter Cheryl Santos and her long-time companion Joseph Virag, as well as her son Richard Santos, his wife Deborah and her grandchildren, Matthew Robert Charles Santos and Amanda Elizabeth Santos.

Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 9:00AM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at BIRCHCREST, 189 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea followed by a funeral mass at St. John of God Church, 1036 Brayton Ave, Somerset. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00PM. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Fall River. For tributes and online registration: www. waring-sullivan.com

Cheryl Santos

I wish for my mom to be remembered as a loving wife, most beloved Mother, friend to all and helper to many. She was a most fabulous, kind, knowledgeable advocate of Special Education for Dyslexia diagnosed children and adults. Both her children earned advanced college degrees and are happy, healthy, loving and productive members of society; contributing towards the betterment for all the oppressed and marginalized in our society. She was a most fabulous decorator of both Wedding and Birthday cakes, her sewing would rival Edith Head and she would share her last pea-bean in her cupboard to make sure no one ever went home hungry. She loved to feed the birds, dogs and wild critters that would oft return with their young the next Spring. She loved to slow dance, listen to Opera and serve High Tea from her most prized bone china sets. Mostly she was the lease selfish person one could ever have as a sister, neighbor, friend, grandmemere, mom or wife. The world has lost a most magnificent human being, blessed lady and gracious woman.

Au revoir jusqu'a` ce qu'on se revoie
Good bye, for now, until we meet again.

As, always with much gratitude and love.

Your loving daughter Cheryl Gay
