Marilyn Grace Somers of Mesa, AZ passed away May 18, 2016. Marilyn was born in Hornell, New York on September 27, 1921, daughter of Travis H. and Grace B. Wood.
Marilyn graduated from Hornell High School, Hornell, NY, in 1940. She attended Hornell Business School. She worked for many years for Sears, Roebuck in Hornell, and was a legal secretary for Schults & Schults, Attorneys in Hornell, N.Y. She also worked at Alfred University, Alfred, NY.
She married Clair W. Harvey in 1942 in Hornell, NY and divorced in 1947. She remarried William F. Somers in 1968 in Hornell, NY, who predeceased her on September 21, 2005 after 37 years of marriage. They moved to Scottsdale, AZ in 1977. She worked for Scottsdale School District as secretary at Coronado High School for 10 years. She and her husband moved to Mesa, AZ 1991.
Marilyn was an Avon representative for over 50 years in various locations where she resided. She was an avid bingo player.
Marilyn is survived by her son, William H. Harvey of Yuma, AZ; foster brother, Rodney J. Hawley, Sr.; stepson, Michael W. Somers of Springfield, MO; grandsons Jeff Harvey of Hornell, NY; Paul, Peter and Adam Somers of Springfield, MO; great grandson, Travis Harvey; one great-great grandson; several nieces, nephews and great-great nieces, nephews; sister Evelyn M. Michel of St. Augustine, Florida. She was predeceased by her parents; brothers Donald S. Wood, Kenneth T. Wood, Carlton G. Wood and great grandson, Matthew Harvey.
Memorial service will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday, June 2, 2016 with a gathering one hour prior at Mariposa Gardens Cemetery Chapel, 6747 E. Broadway Rd, Mesa, AZ. Interment will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd, Phoenix, AZ.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Fountain of the Sun Memorial Fund, 540 S. 80th St, Mesa, AZ 85208, Hornell High School Alumni Association, P.O. Box 135, Hornell, New York 14843, Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flowers St, Phoenix, AZ 85014 or your local hospice foundation in the Memory of Marilyn G. (Harvey) Somers.
