Marjorie Bohrer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 11, 2017.

My mother Marjorie Agnes Proudfoot Bohrer passed away at her Winnetka, Illinois home on May 10, 2017 at age 97. She survived her husband of 56 years, Mason L. Bohrer, who passed on in 2002. She was well known to many New Trier Township High School students as their teacher, Madame Bohrer. Teaching and speaking French defined much of her life, but in later years she said, "I enjoyed teaching, and I enjoy not teaching."

She could be politely strict in the classroom. When I was the only student who skipped her class in what was supposed to have been a mass ditch by everyone, I got a ditch slip, just like anyone else. I had a 91 average in her class. 92 was required for an A. What grade do you think I got? (It wasn't an A.)

Mom was fair, and she was kind. She was born in 1920 in Chicago, but spent most of her early years in California. She was a lifelong member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, wherever she lived. In her later years, she walked to the Christian Science reading room in Winnetka to volunteer weekly, using her walking chair to get there.

She was never a very large person, but she had the outsized will to overcome many challenges in her life. There wasn't much money when she and her sister Janet were growing up in Hermosa Beach, California with their mom, but Grandmommie Proudfoot always worked hard to keep them fed and sheltered. That's what Mom learned to do too, and what she passed on to us.

She got her degree in French from UC Berkeley, and taught French at Liberty Union High School in Brentwood, California during WW II. She met my father Mason Bohrer at a USO dance the night before he shipped out to Australia, and they corresponded every day until he came back from the war and married her.

I always enjoyed talking with her about what life was like when she was growing up near the beach, or sharing memories of the family ranch in western Montana, or moving to Winnetka, Illinois in 1964, or about her frequent trips to France with my dad.

She was the beloved wife of the late Mason L. Bohrer; loving mother of Douglas R. (Susan Goldberg), Bruce D., and Mark W. (Patricia L. Goodman) Bohrer; proud grandmother of Charlotte (Colin) Winters, Victoria (Joshua) McDonnough, and step-grandmother of Alicia (Bryan) Sadoff and Keith (Peri) Goldberg; caring great grandmother of Edward George Winters, step-great grandmother of Bradley and Adam Sadoff, Nacia, Matthew, and Jonathon Goldberg; kind sister of Janet (late Albert) Proudfoot Hendon. Marjorie is survived by many nieces, nephews and former daughters-in-law Nancy King Bohrer and Jean Ann Vrechek.

The celebration of my mother's life will be on Saturday, May 13. Greeting the family will start at 3:30 pm, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 pm and a reception afterwards at Wm H. Scott Funeral Home, 1100 Greenleaf Avenue, Wilmette, IL 60091. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Salish Kootenai College, Pablo, Montana. To all family and friends of Midge. She was generous, loving, helpful colleague of mine when we worked together at New Trier High School. I was just thinking of Midge during the last few days. She was a wonderful woman.
She will be missed.

My thoughts, prayers and sympathy to her family and friends.

Dear Family,

Who could forget Midge? She was always the lovely lady. We had Montana in common and Christian Science. Also some CS friends. I remember seeing her and chatting at one of the CS lectures. It was wonderful.

Most of all, I remember her from the Book Group at the Woman's Club. Though we did not see eye to eye on all the readings, we enjoyed each other's perspective, and that's what being in a book group is really about.

God bless Midge and you, and may we all meet in Heaven some day.

Blessings always, Linnea
