Marjorie Hayes Powers, 89, of Norfolk, VA, went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 25, 2014 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on August 7, 1924 in Kinston, NC to the late Leta Hayes. She will join her late son Robert Earl Powers; her sister Beatrice Pennington; her niece Rosemary Pennington. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Norman Powers; her son N. Preston Powers Jr. and his wife Debbie Hoover Powers, of Norfolk, VA.; Roberts wife, Toni Powers of Hurlock, MD; her daughter Cynthia Powers Winslow and her husband Woody Winslow of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived...

She was born on August 7, 1924 in Kinston, NC to the late Leta Hayes. She will join her late son Robert Earl Powers; her sister Beatrice Pennington; her niece Rosemary Pennington. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Norman Powers; her son N. Preston Powers Jr. and his wife Debbie Hoover Powers, of Norfolk, VA.; Roberts wife, Toni Powers of Hurlock, MD; her daughter Cynthia Powers Winslow and her husband Woody Winslow of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by seven grand children, Wesley and Jacob Powers, Robbie Powers, and Katie, Annie, Laura, and Maggie Winslow. And one great grandchild Cassie Powers. Her Nephew Bill Pennington. As well as her In Laws and many nieces and nephews.
Marjorie's husband Norman served in the Army Air Corps in WWII and they were married upon his return. Marjorie worked at the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown while her husband completed college at William and Mary. He was employed by IBM in Norfolk. During that time Marjorie became active in the Jr. Women's Club and served as Chaplain among other duties. She was also active in several Presbyterian Churches, serving as President of the Women of the Church as well as serving as Chairman of World Missions with Norfolk Presbytery.
Marjorie was active in the PTA, a Cub Scouts Den Mother, as well as a "soccer mom." When her husband was transferred to New Jersey with IBM, she became active in the Girl Scouts and served as Neighborhood Chairman and was awarded the Thanks Award for outstanding leadership on Westchester County.
In New Jersey, Marjorie was very active in her Church and served as a Deacon and Elder in the West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood, as well as taught Sunday School Classes and sang in the Chancel Choir.
When Norman retired from IBM they moved back to Norfolk and Marjorie became active in the Kempsville Presbyterian Church and served. With her husband as leaders in the Community and Nations Task Force and Faith, Freedom and Citizenship Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the choir for ten years. During this time she was also a principle and served as President for two of her ten years with Village Art Gallery.
Norman and Marjorie spent a lot of their free time with their children on the water, crabbing, fishing, and sailing up and down the Chesapeake Bay and Long Island Sound. One memorable sailing trip with her children was when they sailed on the Hudson River during the Operation Sail event in 1976 along the with Tall Ships.
She was a well loved woman by many and will be missed greatly.
There will be a graveside service at Forrest Lawn Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at Kempsville Presbyterian Church. A reception in the Fellowship Hall will follow the Memorial Service.
