Marjorie Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 19, 2014.

Died at 105 years in Kitchener on Sunday, October 19, 2014 of an old age. She was born in 1909 in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England to Frank and Matilda Underwood. She married Canadian Army corporal Dennis (Denny) Smith in February 1945 and emigrated to Canada in May 1946. She was predeceased by Denny in 2002, by her parents and by three sisters (Dorothy, Lily, Eva) and seven brothers (Harold, Archie, Lawrence, Sidney, Stanley, Albert, Reginald).

She is survived by son Daryl and nieces and nephews and their extensive families in England and Australia.

In Worcestershire she worked for J.P. Harvey and National Standard. In Kitchener she worked for Goodwill Department Store, George Whitney Realty and Ostranders Jewelers.

Marjorie was a true lady and the leader of her family. She was very particular about her appearance, home and garden. In every thought and gesture, she ensured that her home was filled with love and she shared her grace and happiness with many friends. In England she excelled at all sports especially tennis and cycling and had a flair for creative crafts. She loved grocery shopping at Zehrs Laurentian, afternoon coffee excursions and offered a warm smile and word of encouragement to everyone.

Marjorie was an extremely proud Canadian and loved the rural beauty of Ontario. She was an advocate for animals and wildlife, saving part of every meal so that she could feed her "birdie" friends on a daily basis. She loved all dogs and marveled at the beauty of flowers. She was profoundly cheerful and optimistic and had a sincere faith in the goodness of other people. She was always interested in tomorrow, in "what is next" and in the compelling future that recedes before us.

She took great delight in the kindness of staff in stores and businesses which she frequented and was renowned for her jaunty red cap. She happily participated in the wonderful Senior Day Program at Kitchener's Downtown Community Centre.

Marjorie Smith always did her best and was an outstanding wife, mother, aunt, neighbour and friend. She returned to Kidderminster often if only in her sweet dreams.

As she would say, "…and away we go!"

Dear Daryl

I was so sad to receive your message.
My heart is with you, I will always treasure my memories of your dear Mum.

I am a link to her family and home in England. Many of my earliest childhood memories in Kidderminster involve Auntie Marjorie : She would take my brother Roger and myself for long walks to Habberley Valley, Spennells and Captains Pool. Happy times together and always a treat at the end of the adventure.

I was a bridesmaid (age 8) at her wedding to Uncle Denny and I still have a wedding photograph to enjoy. I was thrilled to be given her treasured bicycle when she left for her new life in Canada.

Auntie Marjorie would send our family gift parcels from Canada and always there would be a pretty dress for me. After World War Two times were hard in England and these luxuries were such a treat to receive.

I wanted to share these personal memories of my dear Aunt because she meant such a lot to me and her kindness and love was truly special and has remained so across the years and the ocean.

Take care Daryl, our thoughts are with you.

Love Juliet Irene Underwood,

Kidderminster. England.

Dear Daryl,
Our thoughts and prayers go out to you at this very sad time. Aunt Marjorie was an inspiration to all of her many relatives in Australia. We have lost a family legend who we all looked up to in such awe and inspiration - we were and indeed are so proud of her and treasure our family connection. If I could reach out across the ocean I would give you a big hug to let you know that your relatives in Australia are all thinking of you and do hope you can gain some comfort in the many, many happy memories that you were so lucky to share with your Mother.
All our love, Pat, Robert and Family (Newcastle NSW Australia)

Daryl,
It is with great sadness that we write this note. Another generation has passed but know that your Mom is at peace. Though she is no longer with us physically, she will remain a part of your life everyday and the memories will again bring a smile to your face. Although we did not know her personally, she gave us much joy through you. She along with you will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Daryl,

I have known and appreciated your mother, and late father, for forty years. She was always lively and had a great sense of humor. I used to enjoy our numerous chats. She was a true lady and as she would quickly tell you if you asked her age, "A lady never tells her age." She was a lady with class and will be much missed. Her like will not be seen again. I was honored to know her and was glad to have a chance to speak with her on the phone earlier this year. I know you are proud of her and you will miss her. Just remember to take care of yourself at this time in your life.
