Longtime Burney resident Marjorie Spooner passed from this life in Redding, March 11, 2012. She had only recently moved to Redding, having lived in Burney for 48 years.
Marjorie was born in Weldon Springs, Missouri on May 16, 1923. She was the first born to Carl H. and Minnie O'Dessa Kreder.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Spooner, who passed away in 1999. They were married for 56 years. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Carl Kreder Jr, and sister, Myrtle Melhoff.
Marjorie was the oldest of six children and although born in Missouri during the dust bowl, her family migrated in 1931 to Oregon. Her father, a farmer searching for the wettest climate, settled the family in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. She graduated from Carlton High School in 1941 and had continued to attend her class reunions until recently. At Carlton High she met her husband, Joe Spooner and they were married in 1943. Soon after, Joe enlisted in the army and served during WWII. He was gone for 3 ½ years during which time Marjorie and her sister, Myrtie, moved to Portland, Oregon, found jobs, and worked until the men returned from the war.
Upon Joe's return they moved to the McMinnville, Oregon area to farm and mechanic, and Marjorie began working at US Bank. They began their family in 1949. In 1960 they moved to California to begin a trucking business, first in Seiad Valley then on to Burney in 1964. Marjorie and Joe, together, operated the trucking business for 30 years.
In addition to their business, Marjorie kept very busy raising her family. She was an avid gardener canning, drying, pickling, and freezing most of the family's food. She was an excellent cook, baker, and an accomplished seamstress.
She lived a very productive life. Marjorie loved and was deeply devoted to her ever growing family. She in turn was highly respected and deeply loved by all of her family.
Marjorie is survived by her 5 children, Dana Spooner, David Spooner, Reta Standiford, Kevin Spooner, Kent Spooner, and their families. She has 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Ilene Hougham and Ruby Lucas, brother Wendal Kreder, and numerous wonderful nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 18th at McDonalds Chapel in Burney from 3-7 p.m. Services for Marjorie will be held Monday, March 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Burney with interment at the Burney Cemetery.
