She was born in Hartlepool, England to Fred and Mimi Arnold, and emigrated to the U.S. at three months old with her older sister Winsome A. Green. Marjorie became a naturalized citizen and received a Citizenship Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution while in high school. She graduated from Braintree High School in Braintree, MA, and married Dr. Peter E. Stokes, a U.S. Navy veteran in 1956.
Marjorie was an avid theatre buff, and did many productions with Philadelphia Plays and Players. She worked for New Jersey Bell, and became the first female lecturer in the company, crisscrossing New Jersey giving lectures and direction on leadership and customer service. Later on in life, she became a D.J. for the NBS Radio Network, and would drive to South Jersey on Saturdays to play her beloved swing and big band music for a new generation. An avid animal lover, she treated pets, ours, and anyone else's as part of the family.
Marjorie is survived by her three children, Lisa, Michelle, and Peter.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. The address is 2 Shelter Lane, Oakland, N.J. 07436, or donations can be made electronically at RBARI.org by clicking on the 'Donate' link at the top of the page.
