Mark Ash Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 22, 2011.

Mark Alan Ash, 57, passed away on February 21, 2011 in Raleigh, NC. He was born on February 22, 1953, in Phoenix, AZ and grew up in Louisville, KY.

Mark attended college at Harvard University where he met his wife Sarah, and he went on to receive his law degree from the University of Virginia. A respected attorney specializing in commercial litigation, Mark practiced law in Raleigh for more than 20 years and was admitted to the American College of Trial Lawyers. While law was his career, Mark's passion was flying. He was a commercially rated pilot who logged more than 4,000 hours in everything from aerobatic biplanes to twin engine transports. He will be remembered by his family, friends and colleagues as a gifted writer, caring mentor, dedicated friend, and loving husband and father.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah, his son Samuel and wife Katie of Seattle, WA, and his daughter Rachel of Raleigh. Mark will also be missed by his parents, father Ralph Ash of Prescott, AZ, his mother Martha Crume Ash of Raleigh, his brother Jeffrey and wife Jeanne Binder of Raleigh, and the family's close friend Georgina Lalli of New York, NY. Mark was preceded in death by his brother Steve.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 26, 2011, at the Cox Aerodrome, 1616 Hwy 64 West, Apex, NC 27523.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children's Flight of Hope, www.childrensflightofhope.org, in memory of Mark.

Dear Sarah and Family,
I'm so, so sorry to hear about your loss. Have the fondest memories of Mark coming over for dinner; boy did he love brisket...brings back a lot of memories from Louisville and Waggener High, especially the paper.
I don't like to welcome any one to the widow ranks, but I will say that the feeling of relief is allowed and as time passes, you will move beyond the pain and toward love and appreciation of what made Mark such a fine person, husband and father.
My thoughts are with you...

My deepest condoloences to you and your family. I knew Mark only for a short time in the 6th grade and part of 7th. He was a wonderful person, kind, very intelligent, and friendly. I also grew up and went to high school with Bernard "Buddy" Weissman.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this tragic time. What a horrible loss. The world will be a lonlier place without him. God Bless You.

Sarah and family, You don't know me, as I live in Greensboro and met Mark through our shared professions of lawyer and mediator. I connected instantly with Mark, concluding right away that here is a good human being - a much more important trait than being a skilled lawyer (which clearly he was.) We always talked family before we talked law. That Mark made the world a better place in so many ways makes his loss all the more sad. My hope is that you will find comfort in good memories of this fine fellow and in the love and care of your family and friends. My thoughts are with you.

Sarah,
Please accept my family's sympathy for your loss. Just looking at the pictures tells me Mark was a wonderful person, full of adventure and deeply loved his kids! I read the comments others have made and obviously he was a deeply respected and talented attorney. I have some idea how much you love your students and how much you give and give. Mark seemed to be the same way. Together you were a remarkable couple. To say you and the kids will have difficult times is an understatement. Life is so very precious. We often just do not appreciate what we have until we lose it. The kids will need you more now than ever. You will need them more now than ever. Mark will always be in your heart and your soul. When you hear a plane you will look up and say a prayer. May peace come to all of you.

Quite a few years ago Mark walked into my life to help me resolve some serious legal issues with one of my products. From that day forward he wasn't just my attorney. He was my friend. My legal matters had me so stressed that I couldn't think straight. Mark helped resolve my issues but more importantly he helped me face them with confidence and my head held high. I gained strength from him just being there. He kept telling me to return back to my "safe harbor" each time the opposing attorney would ruffle me.

He always updated on everyone in his family. We shared the love of flying and did it together many times. Mark you are now in your safe harbor. Thanks friend. I will miss you.

Sarah, Rachel and Sam - Mark was one of the most courageous lawyers and people I've known. He also was a very kind person and showed genuine concern for others while being a leader. The community will miss him and our condolences and thoughts are with you in your time of loss.

Sarah, Rachel, Sam and Katie,

I know how heartbroken you must be. I will miss Mark's friendship, kindness and wise counsel. I had the privilege of calling Mark a friend for 22 years. He welcomed me to Smith Anderson in 1989. He helped me think through some of my biggest career decisions and encouraged me to be bold and take risk. He challenged me to think about what really made me happy and what gave me energy. But what I enjoyed most were the times the conversation turned to family and to hobbies. Mark loved talking about Sarah's accomplishments at NC State; he loved talking about Sam (applying to Yale as a kid who already had a pilot's license and who already had spent time studying and living in Russia) and he loved Rachel's wide open personality and free spirit. When Tim recently decided to take flying lessons, Mark was right there to encourage him. Mark had a heart of gold. I'm a better person for having known him.

To the Ash family: I am very sorry to learn today of Mark's death, and for the pain it must cause you all. I knew Mark when I served as FAA counsel in the Hendricks Motorsports trial, and, as a fellow pilot, talked a good deal with him about flying. He was exceptionally friendly, outgoing, and courteous as well as a fine lawyer. Please accept my condolences.

Some of the best moments of my first months practicing law were with Mark. A humble humanitarian, thoughtful attorney, and patient mentor, Mark brought immense integrity to the profession and always sought what was fundamentally fair. These are the things that make his legacy.

Sam and Rachel, hold your heads high, your dad will be the only angel doing barrel rolls in the sky.

Dr. Ash, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Mark was my opposing counsel in the Hendrick Motorsports litigation. He was brilliant and tough, but always fair, ethical, and civil. Whenever he spoke of his family, his love and pride were obvious. We will all miss him very much.

Mark, You were my lawyer through a long and harrowing four year legal battle. No matter how bad things got you never failed to remind me to "Always wear the white hat." You wore the white hat every day of your life. I will miss you my friend.

Mark, we will miss you deeply. My family and I met you through a most unlikely situation, my daughters cancer. We got to know you over the last few years because of your energetic devotion to Children's Flight of Hope and your passion to fly. You were always great to talk to and, if for but a brief moment, you were able to take my mind off of the troubles I faced. I was touched by your genuine attention you paid to Alexandra and my family. We told her of your passing and her first thoughts were that She will miss sharing her chocolate moose cake and Delizia's pizza from NY with you in Teeterboro, NJ. As a father myself, in all our many discussions over the years, I could feel the passion you had for flying and the love you had for your family. It was so obvious you were very proud of all the accomplishments and successes of your family. I can't help but think this is all so sudden. I mean, It was only on Feb 12th we last saw you, and I tried to get you to do a barrel roll in the plane the next time you flew us. I will never forget the time we stayed all day in New York in December of 2009. You and George went to the Guggenheim Museum while we were at MSKCC and then treated us to a wonderful dinner and introduced us to long time friends of yours, we had such a relaxing time even though we were facing our 2nd relapse. We will truly miss you, but know, that we will never forget you.

Sarah, Sam and Rachel, please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your dear husband and father, Mark. He was one of my mentors and teachers when I worked at Smith Anderson over 9 years ago, and I worked with him nearly every day, it seems, during my 4 years there. He spoke of you three constantly, and his deep love for you was evident in the way his voice and expression would change when sharing little anecdotes about your family life together. I am so sorry for your loss.
