BROWN, MARK N., 74, died Thursday, April 18, 2013.  Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Morris and Ida (Mofchum) Brown.



After graduating from Boston Latin School, Mark earned a BA from Harvard University magna cum laude, and went on to earn a PhD in history from Harvard University and an MLS from the University of Pittsburgh.  Professionally, he was a professor of history at Carnegie Mellon University, editor of the bibliography, “European Americana”, and then Curator of Manuscripts at the John Hay Library at Brown University for 25 years until retiring in 2004.  In 1989, his book, “The Works of George Savile Marquis of Halifax” was published by Oxford University Press.  During his retirement he served on the RI Historical Records Advisory Board and was an avid genealogist, unearthing numerous family connections across the world.



He is survived by his children, Amanda and Jonathan Brown; his sister, Jane Stempel and longtime companion, Joanna Katsune.



His funeral services will be held on Friday, April 19, 2013 at Temple Beth-El, 70 Orchard Ave., Providence at 11:30 AM. Burial will be in Kehillath Jacob Cemetery in West Roxbury, MA.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Jewish Genealogical Society, 15 West 16th Street, New York, NY 10011, www.jgsny.org.  Shiva will be observed at his late residence after the service on Friday until 7 PM, Sunday 2-4 and Monday 5-7.

My deepest condolences to Mark's family and friends.Mark was a nice,nice man who whenever we saw each other at a family event had a smile on his face,was friendly and genuinely interested in what was going on with me and my family.He was a real mensch and great cousin.My mother and grandmother thought the world of him.
