Mark Hartman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 12, 2015.

Mark Antony Hartman, 41, of Williamsburg, passed away on April 10, 2015, following an eight and a half year battle with leukemia. He was at home, surrounded by the company of his loving family.

Mark was born May 5, 1973 to Roger C. and Chung Ye Hartman in Sioux Falls, SD. He grew up in Canistota, SD, where he attended grade school. In 1987, his family relocated to Madison, SD, and he graduated from Madison High School in 1991.

In November of 1991, Mark joined the United States Air Force, providing support for Desert Storm. During his service, he was awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal with One Device, the Air Force Overseas Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal with One Device, among many other awards and medals. He was honorably discharged in May of 1999.

Following his military service, Mark married his wife, Cynthia Jean Mills, on June 12, 1999. They made their home in Williamsburg, VA raising their sons, Luke and Ryan.

Locally, Mark was a member of the Williamsburg Seventh-day Adventist Church, and was involved with several military organizations, including the Disabled Veterans of America, and the V.F.W. In his spare time, he enjoyed motorcycles and woodworking.

Mark will be missed by his wife, Cynthia Jean Hartman (Mills); his sons, Luke Antony and Ryan Charles; his father, Roger C. Hartman of Madison, SD; and his sister, Amy M. Hartman of Concord, NC. His mother, Chung Ye Hartman, preceded him in death.

Services will be held on Sunday, April 19 at 1:00 PM at the Williamsburg Seventh-day Adventist Church, 3989 John Tyler Hwy, Williamsburg. Interment will take place at 1:00 PM on Monday, April 20 at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milner's Rd., Suffolk.

My husband and I met Mark several years ago when we rode in the Tour Virginia Motorcycle ride. We noticed this young man setting at a table - he seemed to be by himself, my husband introduced us and we became instant friends. Something drew us to him, we talked for a long time in the parking lot. What a special man, he spoke of his wife Cindy and their 2 boys. We hoped to meet up again. We have FB'd several times over the years and was so saddened today when I read about his passing. I'm so glad God caused our paths to cross, I don't believe it was an accident but a divine meeting orchestrated by our Heavenly Father. Our condolences and Prayers for you Cindy and the boys.

My deepest sympathy to Mark's family and friends. I remember Mark as a very kind and happy teenager. Just three years ago, I met him again with his wife and boys at a mini reunion at Lake Herman. He had grown into a very kind, considerate and awesome human being. His illness never seemed to slow him down or keep him from achieving the best life. It was very obvious about how much he loved his wife and kids. After we connected, I read about his journey on Facebook and really wanted him to conquer his disease and live to be a wise old man. I'm sad that didn't happen, but definitely lived the life that he did have and brought much goodness to all that he encountered. Prayers to your family,

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
