Mark Miesfeld Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 8, 2014.

Mark E Miesfeld

Mark E Miesfeld was born March 2, 1951, in Washington D.C. to Dr. Roger Randolph Miesfeld and Patricia Miesfeld. He was the oldest of four children. He grew up in San Diego, California graduating from Kearney High School. Mark was an exceptional student and strong football player in High School. Mark was a brilliant but humble man and although he was a National Merit Scholar he chose to work with his hands in the construction industry. He was injured on the job after falling three stories down an elevator shaft. He broke his back and doctors told him he would not be able to walk again. Mark’s incredible strength and determination proved the doctors wrong and he ran numerous 10K races in heavy work boots with metal pins in his body.

Mark refocused his talents and attended the University of Arizona in Tucson majoring in Computer Science. He worked for several software companies including IBM and CISCO, eventually working for Applied Micro Circuits Corporation for 12 years as a Senior Software Engineer and writing embedded software. In his spare time he volunteered his talents to an international computer development team with professionals from all over the world. He spent 7 years leading Software Test Automation. He worked extensively on development teams for device drivers for this organization.

Although Mark did not have any children of his own, he loved children and helped raise his nieces and nephews. He resided with his brother Bart and his family for almost 20 years. He was a second father to Cienna, Vail and Berk, present at each of their births and every monumental event. He and his dog, Conrad, were regulars at Pony League baseball and Pop Warner football.

Mark loved the outdoors. He spent every vacation for years hiking in the Trinity Alps. He enjoyed the peace and quiet that nature provided. He treasured simplistic pleasures. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed gardening.

He was a brilliant but humble and simple man. He was incredibly strong both physically and mentally. He was extremely dedicated to family and would do anything for family members.

He passed on Sunday, December 7, 2014, at the age of 63 in San Diego, California after suffering a severe stroke. He is survived by his mother Patricia Girardi of La Jolla, California; his siblings,; Greta Etnyre of Houston, Texas; Roger Miesfeld of Tucson, Arizona; and Bart Miesfeld of La Jolla, California, as well as nieces and nephews Brad Etnyre, Nicole Miesfeld, Noelle Miesfeld, Barrett Miesfeld, Cienna Miesfeld, Vail Miesfeld and Berkeley Miesfeld.

A private celebration of his life will be held in the Trinity Alps with family members. Online condolences can be left on the Pacific Beach Chapel website. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to American Cancer Society, https://donate.cancer.org/index. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to members of Sharp Coronado Sub Acute care who cared for Mark in his final months.

To Mark's Mom, Greta, Roger, and Bart,

I just learned of Mark's passing and had to write you a note. Mark was my best friend at Grace Lutheran Elementary School and along with Henry Kogler we considered ourselves the "3 Musketeers." Mark and I had planned at a young age to parachute out of a plane over Africa so we could live like Tarzans. We used to watch Tarzan episodes on Saturday afternoons and tried to remember Tarzan's words to the animals which we figured would come in handy in the jungle. I remember spending the night at your house multiple times and Mark also did sleep-overs at my house. I am doing well and about to retire. I believe my brother Tom was Roger's age and he is also doing well and living in Texas. I wish I had kept in touch with Mark. Whenever I think of early times at Grace Lutheran I always think of Mark.

Dear Miesfelds,
What a sock to hear that Mark had passed away. I always thought we would get together again and maybe regain our long lost friendship. It does not seem so long ago (45 years) that Mark and I left San Diego and moved north to Santa Rosa. "What a long strange trip it's been". My deepest condolences.

Dear friends of Mark and the ooRexx community,

My husband, Roger, and I along with our 3 children are very much comforted by reading the wonderful comments you have offered about Mark. He was always so kind and generous helping us raise our three children in Tucson. Mark was Uncle "tough as nails" to our three kids from the time our oldest was 3 to 13 years old. Mark was living in Tucson, attending the UofA, and working at IBM. Mark and Conrad were a part of our family until he moved to San Diego to look for a job. Nicole, Noelle, and Barrett are now ages 28, 26, & 22. On the hiking trails of Southern Arizona and the play ground of Telluride, a slip up or tumble on the slippy or rocky trail, Mark was able to redirect their attention from the discomfort by reminding them they were as tough as nails! Roger and Mark teamed up to show the Tucson Miesfeld kids about hiking, camping, trail biking, white water rafting, and fishing. They fondly remember their adventures with their Uncle Mark (Mr. Tough as Nails). Mark has influenced us greatly in his efforts to do the right thing in respect to nature and our communities. Roger and I will remember his wisdom and companionship as a big brother and a person who was respected in our corner of the world.

Dear Miesfeld Family,

My condolences about the loss of my good friend Mark Miesfeld. We worked on a number of projects together since 2002. From San Diego, to Irvine, to Sunnyvale and San Jose. From Software Development, to hardware testing. From Windows, to AIX, to SunOS, to Linux. From Small embedded products to the Sun E10K. Mark did it all. It was great to work with Mark. Even better was to hear stories about his family. He loved to talk about his nephews and nieces and his Brother and sister-in-law. Great Memories.

Rest In Peace Mark.

Prof. Dr. Rony G. Flatscher

Dear family:

my deepest condolences about the loss of such a great man, a person who truly was "one in a million"!

Mark's first e-mail to the developer list for the fine programming language Open Object Rexx (ooRexx), that I have on file dates from 4/20/2005 where he makes the ooRexx developer team aware of a bug in a patch (piece of a software to enhance the programming language). Many e-mails and a lot of Rexx-centric work followed.

From an e-mail from me to Mark from 9/22/2006: "... I learn really a *lot* by just looking at your solutions there; both your explanations and patches are really *very* interesting and informative for me! ...".

There has always been something to be learned from Mark, technically, but also personally ever since then. He was incredible knowledgeable, patient, helpful, friendly (I have never experienced any bad word or feelings, ever!), diligent, unassuming, just a great, fine man one only could wish to have as a friend!

There are many, really many who will dearly miss Mark, literally around the entire globe, having met Mark in the Rexx space! His hard work for Rexx will be there and available for many years to come!

Although it is terrible what has happened and what Mark had to endure for half a year and finally had to give in, I am really very grateful to have met him on the Internet and have become over time a "remote" friend, without ever having met in person!

Mark, may you rest in peace!

May I add my condolences to Bart and Mark's family - I was so sad to hear the news. Mark was brilliant. So helpful, and never ever annoyed at all at my sometimes silly questions. I regret very much that I never met him face to face. RIP Mark. We will miss
you greatly.

My condolences to Bart and Family. Mark has been a good friend to me even though I never met him in person. He was always encouraging, friendly and helpful - always the first to answer a technical question and he never stinted on worked examples. I have missed him greatly these past six months.

There is a list of names that appear in nearly every Rexx language discussion and I have met so few of them; Mark included. Yet, I feel like he is as close as any neighbor or pal just around the corner. We all at the Rexx language association shall miss Mark, but he'll always be close in our hearts.

Mark was always a huge help with ooRexx Dialog. My projects would be much less than they are if he hadn't been so instructive. He never refused a request for assistance and always, it seemed, had a solution for my problems. He'll be sorely missed. My condolences to his family. I know he must have been very special for you, too.

December 9, 2014

I would like to offer my condolences to the family and everyone that has known Mark, on behalf of the Rexx Language Association. Mark was a well loved and highly estimated member of our Rexx community. His contributions to ooRexx and especially Dialog Manager have been extensive. Although most of our community only knew Mark through our mailing lists, he will be deeply missed.
