Martha Estelle Jones Bilbro, 91, resident of Jamestown, NC passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on March 30, 2015.
She was born November 27, 1923 in Greensboro, NC to Etta Beach Jones and Jesse Benton Jones. Martha Estelle married William "Bill" Richard Bilbro January 10, 1947 at the home of her parents. She graduated from Sumner High School in 1940, then attended Kings Business School in Greensboro. During WWII, she served as a candy striper and worked for the ORD (Overseas Replacement Depot). She also worked for MoJud Hosiery know as "MoJo" and the IRS while still a resident of Greensboro. After moving to Charlotte in 1955 she later worked for USF&G, then for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools at the Education Center beginning March 1, 1967 until her retirement on April 30, 1986. She was an active member of Jamestown United Methodist Church.
She loved the outdoors and spent countless hours with Bill maintaining vegetable and flower gardens, and treasured vacation spots together. They took great pleasure working side by side on even the smallest task. Their 68 years of marriage provided them with many memories of early projects that later in life brought them great joy and wonderful family memories.
Her family was her top priority and she provided a constant stream of love to her husband, her children, their spouses, grandchildren and great-grands. She pulled a stool up to the kitchen counter many times over the years to allow little hands to reach so they could help her, all the while instilling such love and independence along the way. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and always gave unselfishly of herself.
She also held a very strong bond with her two sisters, Nell and Mabel. The three of them had unlimited stories of their fun together and were blessed to enjoy this close relationship all their lives. They each shared a love of scrabble and were strong competitors and all it took was a quick nod and the board was set ready to go.
Martha Estelle is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Richard Bilbro; sons, Thomas "Tom" Richard Bilbro (Beverly) of Charlotte, NC, David "Dave" Michael Bilbro (Sandra) of Harrisburg, NC; daughter, Sue "Susie" Bilbro Pappas (John) of Matthews, NC; grandchildren, Jon Bilbro (Rona), Joe Bilbro (Amelia), Andrew Pappas (Jessie), Elizabeth Hill (Brandon), Leslie Barto (Paul), Michael Bilbro (Kristen); great-grands, Maya, Maren, Silas, Noah, Madolyn, Lilian, Levi; devoted brother, William "Bill" Charles Jones (Lib) and loving extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jesse "Jake" Benton Jones, Jr. and sisters, Nell Jones Bilbro and Mabel Jones Latta.
A service remembering Martha's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 4 at the Jamestown United Methodist Church with Reverend Jim Watford officiating.
