Martha Callaway Obituary

Martha J. Callaway, 89, of Columbus, passed away at 9:55 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
She was born on February 6, 1923, in Connersville, Indiana, to Frank E. and Hazel Personette Creamer. She married Dr. Glenn E. Callaway Sr., December 25, 1942, in Connersville. He preceded her in death September 24, 1999.

Mrs. Callaway graduated from Connersville High School and attended Miami University of Ohio and Cincinnati College of Music. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Tri Kappa, Magazine Club, Brown County Art Gallery and Guild, Indiana Water Color Society, Hoosier Salon, Indiana Heritage Arts and Columbus Art League. She also was a former accompanist of "The Noteables."

She was a founder of the Distinguished Speakers Series, was a member of the original Pro Musica Board and a charter member of National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. She was a winner of the Mayor's Art Award and the 1990 Community Arts Award.

A natural pianist with a remarkable ear, she accompanied soloists and groups from an early age. At the age of 60, she studied painting under Floyd Hopper at the Indianapolis Art League and began an unexpected "career" in water colors.

Survivors include her sons, Glenn Edwin Callaway Jr., and his wife Judy, of Cloumbus, and Matthew Callaway of Columbus; a daughter, Jane (Gerald) Schwan of Bellingham, Wash.; 5 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Mary Fenton; and brothers, James and George Creamer.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Four Seasons Retirement Center Chapel with Rev. Phyllis Hawkins officiating. Calling will be from 2:00 p.m. to service time Sunday at the chapel. Private inurnment will be at the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium.

Arrangements were by Hathaway-Myers Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Dr. Glenn E. Callaway Sr. Scholarship Fund at the Heritage Fund.
