Martin Adler, 89, of Rumson, passed away peacefully on Monday July 2, surrounded by his family who loved him dearly.

Born in 1922 in Brooklyn to European immigrant parents Solomon and Hannah Adler, Mr. Adler was the youngest of four children. He served in the US Army as a Sargent in WWII.

Upon returning from WWII, Marty ran numerous hotels and restaurants, culminating in the Grand Hotel of Hoboken NJ, when it was the scene of the 1954 Academy Award winning Elia Kazan film On the Waterfront, starring Marlon Brando.

Adler met Shirley Woolf, the love of his life, while walking along the beach in Fire Island, NY, in 1963. He was selling homes as a real estate agent for the Kislak Company at the time, and she had finished a job as a secretary in New York City, after growing up in London. It was love at first sight.

Adler rose through the ranks of the Kislak Company – the New Jersey area's largest real estate brokerage firm for apartment buildings and multifamily complexes. Eventually, Adler became both the president of Kislak and founding president of the NJ Apartment Association.

He was active in many philanthropies, and a member of Congregation B'nai Israel of Rumson.

Martin and Shirley remained sweethearts every day of the rest of his life.

He was predeceased by his parents, Solomon and Hannah Adler, two brothers, David and Judge Gerald Adler, and a sister, Ruth Travitsky.

He is survived by his wife Shirley, son Spencer, daughter Laura, and beloved caregiver Manana.

Graveside services are Tuesday 12:00 noon at Congregation B'nai Israel cemetery, Riverdale Ave. Tinton Falls. Shiva will be observed at the Adler residence in Rumson on the fourth of July.

In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged, to the Rumson First Aid and Police Departments.
