Martin Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 4, 2012.

Martin Olof Johnson, of Prairie Village, Kansas, lost his brave fight with lung cancer at his home early December 1, 2012. Born June 24, 1931 to Martha and Olof Johnson, he grew up in Brookside and was a lifelong resident of the Kansas City area. Martin attended Southwest High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon returning from service, he worked at Hallmark where he met his wife, Jo Ann Lewis. They married in 1958 at First Lutheran Church and built their house in what is now Prairie Village in 1959. They joined Hillcrest Covenant Church in 1965 and Martin continued his career at Certain- Teed for many years. Martin filled his time bowling on several leagues and even bowled semi- professionally. He loved watching basketball, football and all sports as well as playing chess. He had a passion for James Bond movies and classical music and was a season ticket holder to the Kansas City Symphony for many years. The Johnson family took many trips to Colorado visiting family as well as trips throughout the United States. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Overland Park, Old Mission, and Ivanhoe. Martin was Past Master at Old Mission Lodge and was a member of the Scottish Rite. Recently he had worked with the Masons raising funds for the new University of Kansas Cancer Center and also volunteered with the CHIP Child Identification & Protection Program. Martin was also a member of the B.P.O. Elks #26, serving as secretary and treasurer for many years and was a former member of the Shriners. Martin is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Jo Ann, daughters, Sheri (Gary) Leffert, Dana (Dave) Gordon, and grandchildren, Kimberly Gordon and Joshua Leffert. Martin was preceded in death by parents, Martha and Olof Johnson, and granddaughter, Grace Gordon. Visitation and Masonic service will be Wednesday evening, December 5th at 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Mount Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 105th and Holmes, Kansas City, Missouri. A celebration of life will be Thursday, December 6th at 1:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Covenant Church at 87th and Nall Avenue. The family requests no flowers.
