Marvin Ames Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 7, 2010.

Marvin Ames was born in St. Marys Kansas April 29, 1928 to Howard and Agnus Ames. Marvin was the 7th of 10 children. He was raised in Kansas, when he was a teenager he came to Oregon. As a tall, thin young man he became known as 'Slim'.

Slim worked at the saw mill in Philomath Oregon. There he met Jim Poage. Jim thought he was a fine, hardworking young man, so he took Slim home for dinner to meet his daughter Bella.

Marvin and Bella were married April 21 1951. He served in the US Army, and was stationed in Germany during the Korean conflict. When he returned they built a life and family in Oregon. Moving from Philomath to Beaverton, and from Banks to Redmond, and finally Newberg, they raised 6 kids who blessed them with 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Marvin worked for over 40 years as a journeyman carpenter. He worked hard to provide for his family, and for the unexpected that was always looming with 6 kids.
After working all week Marvin and Bella would load up the kids, the truck and head out to go camping. The family developed a deep love of fishing, hiking, swimming and the outdoors.

Wherever Marvin lived or worked he could be found at the local café at 5:00 am. He enjoyed the coffee, the camaraderie, and best of all – giving the waitresses a hard time.

During his retirement years Marvin enjoyed traveling the U.S. with Bella, camping, making homemade gifts, gardening, and spending time with family.

Marvin and Bella have created a legacy of family camp outs that continues on. The heritage of their family and the gatherings continue to grow in number and in love.

Those who carry Marvin forward are his Wife, Bella Ames of Newberg, OR; Sister, Rose Kabriel of Topeka KS; Sons, Dale Ames of Estacada, OR; Howard Ames of McMinnville, OR; Daughters, Alice Sanchez of Newberg, OR; Sue Majhor of Beaverton, OR; Norma Yoder of Newberg, OR; Carol Gardner of Chandler, AZ. The apples of his eye are Grandchildren; Joshua Ames, Melissa Wooten, Deana Roedel, Melina Sanchez, Andrea Schueler, Nick Sanchez, Keith Majhor, Karen Majhor, Erica Yoder, and Emily Yoder and Great-grandchilden; Ashley Robinson, Kristen Robinson, Kendra Wooten, Noah Wooten, Dylan Ames, Skyler Ames, Elias Ames, Ellie Roedel, and Isaiah Roedel.

Memories, Bella, of when you were going with Marvin, of your wedding... and of how much I, we girls, missed you when he "took you away!" Am glad he was a fine man, glad for your lovely children, and now grandchildren. So glad you are left with loving care around you! Wish I could be there with you this afternoon, but Sweden is too far away. Lots of love and tender sympathy comes with this to all of you, Audrey

We remember Marvin & Bella & the many times that we spent time together. We use to walk with them at Wal-Mart on early morning exercise program & then all of us would gather at the resturant for coffee & chit chat. Was a fun time.
We also remember our get together times at Yuma Arizona when we spent time there in the winters, going out to restaurants to eat & just enjoy the sun & warm weather.
They were a really nice friendly couple & easy to be around.
