Marvin James Brickert, 82, of Monument, CO, died the evening of March 3, 2013, after a 23
year battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Born July 11, 1931, in Streator, IL, to the late August and Viola Brickert. Marvin
graduated from Streator High School in 1949. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business
Management with a minor in Education from North Central College in Naperville, IL. and a
Master of Arts in from Colorado State College (now University of Northern Colorado) in Greeley, CO. Marvin married Sandra Ann Richards, of Winthrop Harbor IL, in 1961.

During his college years, Marvin was called to serve with the U.S. Army 7th Infantry Division in
the Korean Conflict from 1951-53, where he was severely wounded by mortar fire. Doctors
could not remove all the shrapnel and told him he would be lucky to walk, and should not expect
to run. However, he did recover and, with excellent support, ran track and cross country when he returned to North Central College.

After graduating, Marvin taught school in Savanna, IL. One of his students would challenge his
beliefs on evolution, leading to a life changing decision to trust Jesus for his everyday life and
forever future. It was also there he decided to make his college minor of education his life major.
Marvin discovered the joy of bringing to life the potential inside of people. He immediately began
seeking a master's degree, and incorporated teaching and travel by going to Colorado State College. Known nationally as a teacher's training college, Marvin pursued both training in
education and counseling to better train high school kids for a strong future, something that
would be his lifetime passion.

Colorado State meant a grad degree and lifetime friendships. Many stories are still told of the
pranks he and his friends played. Marvin put his counseling degree to work at
Wasson High School in Colorado Springs for two years. The two Brickert children, Scott and Teri, were also born in Colorado Springs. The death of Marvin's father in 1967 prompted the family to move back to Illinois to be closer to family. However, beginning in the 1970's most summer vacations involved a trip to Colorado, with visits to college friends on the way, and always with a stop in Colorado Springs.

He continued his counseling career in Illinois at Lake Zurich High School, but then changed course to what became his true calling as a special education teacher who helped kids turn their lives around at Waukegan East High School, from which he retired in 1990. There are many kids from those years who had a very special place in his heart and with some he was still in touch. They touched and inspired him and he inspired them.

After retiring, Marvin and Sandi visited family in Texas, Wisconsin, Illinois and Colorado. His
grandchildren brought him special joy. Marvin and Sandi moved to Colorado in 2004 to be near
their children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Sandra, son M. Scott Brickert,
daughter Teri Lynne Nott, and two grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Herbert
Brickert, 84, of Streator, IL, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements will be held Friday March 7 at the Chapel of Memories, Colorado Springs, CO, with 1pm Visitation, 2pm services including graveside honor guard in the Evergreen Cemetery, followed by a time to gather and reminisce back at the Chapel of Memories.

We are asking that friends and family remember Marv by supporting their local hospice.
